Naw, it's putting tha cart before tha horse in tha hope that tha horse sees said cart, thinks 'I was built to pull that baby' and they get hitched...there is method to tha madness fo sure.Originally posted by Baca Loco
The whole add a city to your name is just so much nonsense. In the major leagues it represents nothing so much as the distance between REAL sports and the current pretensions of paintball.
Biensur - but tha burden of 'doing something' falls on tha teams shoulders as much as tha leagues...non-action by tha relevant parties does not a bad idea make, it's just the standard curse of Paintball c- laziness, ineptitude and a lack of vision.Originally posted by Baca Loco
I would have agreed with you once, Maestro, but I don't anymore for the simple fact there is a huge disconnect that simply investing teams with city names doesn't and can't overcome in and of itself. And the truth is nobody is making any effort to make the connections real. They aren't simply gonna spring into existence should TV come a-calling.
The NXL started it cus they had a notion of replicating big time sports practices in paintball. That hasn't happened and in the meantime they've done zip, zero, zilch to in any way at all tie their teams to their home towns.
The rest of the followers are doing it now to invest their pro ideas with the same sort of superficial mantle of reality and they too are doing nothing but proclaiming its import as the latest advance of paintball. It's a semantic stunt.
Let's see how this city business works for the UAPL. They, after all, have a real TV contract and will have a fully televised season come October. Will the home towns embrace "their" teams? Will it matter?
My answer is no, if the only thing the leagues and teams do is appropriate the names.

It is a in principal a great Idea, I don't see there being any harm in naming the team according to location.
But until it becomes tied in with the idea of big sports it wont work as Baca has pointed out.
At the moment, UK football and US Football teams all have a location based name, Man Utd, Baltimore Ravens, etc but they also have a home ground. Home fans that travel, and support the team.
Paintball is a group of events around the world that no team really calls its own. Yes Campaign is for all UK teams but it then makes 80% of the event a home game for a team.
You need specific X-Ball (or whatever) venues for each team, a game that runs for 60/90 minutes people pay the entry and watch the game. they then follow London Tigers to the Manchester Nexus ground because its the following your team.
I know I speak from an idealistic point of view but its the only way I can see the names help build a fan base.
I know in the PA its helped get a few teams more local exposure (Tsunami, Leicester Wildcats) but has it built a real fan base to the teams? I dont think so, but I stand to be proved wrong.
They are great ambassadors to promotion of the sport but nessicerily of the team itself.
