I understand this line of reasoning and partly agree with it myself but I think the weights need to shift towards more respect for the rules and officials.

Pro ice hockey must certainly be hard to keep control of and to fairly officiate and painball certainly is too. But I don't think for a New York second that there is anyone in the whole mix of the sport that "designs" those interesting encounters. I think they really try to keep on top of things and to do their jobs of managing the game.

PB referees need to work hard to gain the respect of the teams, players and coaches because that respect is not there yet. Along with the consistency that demands will come better game managment. The "entertainment" aspect will take care of itself because no matter how good officiating becomes that element of human nature will always be there. We don't need to promote it in any way; just substantially keep a lid on it.

That is a fair point but when it kicks off on the ice the Refs let it unfold and reach a conclusion.

The crowd love it, the players get binned and on they go.

It is all about managing the game as you say but if Marcus wants to wipe, bonus ball the hell out of someone then whatever, as long as he is prepared to take the penalty.

If he is doing it to tie up the judges so the rest of the team can do "other" things then you could class it as a professional foul and those are present in every sport out there, although alot of them are described as mere "gamesmanship".

I think we need to seperate what is needed to provide an entertaining afternoons television and what needs to be done to make the sport grow at every level.

Untill teams are paid to entertain then the industry has to provide a platform for the players and not the spectators.

People are drawn to hockey games because of the game, not fights. Biggest cheers come from scoring goals and winning games. Fist fights are pretty rare nowadays as penalties are stiff. Ofcourse I'm talking about pro hockey, not some 3rd grade brit hockey.

People usually go to watch sports they know well. They know what to look and cheer for. If paintballers find paintball boring to watch, I'm afraid it will be even more boring for generel public. But then again, I might be wrong. I've never understood what's so interesting in football matches (soccer, the most boring game on earth), and still hundreds of millions of people love to watch it. Why?

Back to paintball..

Enough of hockey and Nielsen, please.

What is the Millennium format in year 2006 or is this just another boring "xball is better/worse than 7-man"-thread?

There is only so many weeks before the season starts so how accurate Robbo's vision on this is?

Thank you for any reliable information.

All of this comes back to both elements I described before: professional game management by the officials and a good set of rules.

If the referees do their job properly then it will be down to the latter. A good set of rules will include penalties that will sufficiently deter players from going against the basic concept of the game which is if you're hit you immediately are out of the game.

Good "gamesmanship" should always take into account the risk of getting caught, what it will cost the team if caught and what it might cost the player personally if caught.

As has been said many times here, X Ball combined with good reffing makes that equation a losing proposition especially with the 90-second rule that gives a point to the opponents for any major penalty incurred in the last 90 seconds of the match.

I'm going to miss the cat and mouse game Markus and I played wherein I knew he was going to cheat and he knew I was going to try and catch him. Once after I caught and penalized his team for his playing on (in a single-goal format game) he laughed and said, "So what you caught me! We still won the game."

With good reffing and good rules the opponents will get the last laugh.

(Sorry, Juice. I had to make this last point about Nielsen. :) )

I wish I could take you up on that challenge, little boy, but I've retired from field reffing. Besides that, it's all about teamwork. The best ref is not much better than the worst fellow ref on the same field because no one person can cover every zone.

I think you played in the wrong place, my boy. If you had played NXL or on some of the PSP fields you would've seen a whole nother thing. And I could be wrong but I don't think you got by with too much during EXL with Yank and Euro refs, that is if you played very much, didn't notice.

Haven't read this forum much lately, have you? The PSP already have it under control. Maybe Mill and NPPL will follow their lead and do likewise. I'd be kinda surprised if Millennium doesn't basically implement very similar programs with similar equipment Season 2006.
