I have marshalled series 2003 and midland masters quite often
As a young and quite a small guy i sometimes do get some shi*
but i also realise the adrenaline involved
so i find the best approach is to step back , let them rant for a few minutes ( which usually calms them down) and then talk sense into them
but make no mistake if i was physically threatened i would be seeking for that player or team to be ejected from the tournament unless a full apology was made.
It was about time the marshall's realise they have the full backing of the tournament organisers and all the players
they are not by themselves when they make decisions
No marshall is an island :)

Re Marshaling

Well most people would not kick off with the marshals but, on the ones that do its very wrong as 1st of all all the marshals are asked by the event holders / sponsers to duty these events, yes wrong calls do happen, but i believe these things iron out in the future torneys . But for the minority that cant control the temper (red Mist ) they should realise these marshals are paint ball players , team members , i was asked to join a team before RDX and i was told by many people that a few of there members have attitude and have kicked off with marshals even banned from one site for life,so i declined there offer so these teams are known and wont be welcomed by some event organisers , but ive marshaled and enjoyed it, its not easy some calls , but the sport needs marshals thumbs up to fair play;)

Quote from section 6.1 of the rules for the Indoor (Most common or severe offences)

- Threatening behavior to a referee, during a game, 25 points plus disqualification
- Aggressive physical contact immediate expulsion of the player from the tournament

I would class a player saying he would knock you out as an offence under the first rule I quoted, and punching him - even if it was just on his shield - as an offence under the second. I was watching that tourney & looking after my team (couldn't play due to injury) & saw a few rules being broken e.g. refusal to leave the field, arguing with the refs etc. If these offences aren't stamped down on they'll get more & more frequent as teams try to push the limits every time out, I saw the same thing happening in the late 80's & early 90s at tournaments.

That said, I thought Delta marshalled probably the best I've seen for a long time :)

I think that...

What people are saying is right about expulsion due to violence however i think that it would be more easy to control these situations if the problem could be solved a little earlier... I have noticed that somebody mentioned earlier about disrespect to football referees, in my opinion i think that the amount of flak that refs in that sport is discusting every day i watch the news to see punk footballers in refs faces shouting and appealing! Just think is it going to change a refs decision NO! so what is the point. I play pretty high level rugby and if you even appeal to a ref there is a penalty against your team! may i emphasise the word team! I think that if players are giving verbal abuse to a referee preventing him from continuing his duties then a 141 should be called. This way the players who are acting as individuals would have a great effect over the whole team. Unless they are a complete premaddona they will have the common sense to bite their tongue and shutup, maybe approach the ref constructively afterwards to suggest improvements but what is done is done let it go!

I agree with most of what youve said Robin but the thing is that unlike Rugby, Paintball judges often change their mind and reverse decisions. So thats why people do it! Ive seen loads of refs whove made the right call change their mind because of players arguing their point. The only ways we can solve this problem is by getting/training up better refs that are more likely to make a correct decision and stick to it.
But aggressive behaviour should be severely punished, with big points penalties to teams and the banning of the offending player from the tournament.
2p :)
