Is the Joe Schmoe profile really necessary?

You sorta' got it Kris, chi sao is a sensitivity drill though, there are exercises specifically to toughen up your forearms. It's basically smashing your arms against your partners, it's all to help you block kicks and such without wincing in pain, and possibly falling over crying.....not that I know anything about that.

If TJ's off the forum for a bit, it's probably 'cause he can't type.;)

Well, some of the guys that have been profiled have gear that would not look out of place on a top team, you know, like Angels.
Am I alone in this, or do other people notice that almost every recballer seems to have a set of Vforce goggles?
No, I fully agree - some of them have great equipment.

rob_evanson, (In reference to PGI Dec '01) are you saying that you have better equipment than a TSG1 Sniper Rifle, fully costomized from an ATS AT85, of which only 4 customizations were made?? Do you have a night vision scope on your paintgun, covered in extremely pricy camo tape from camoclad.com?? This guy has a multitude of 30 round electronic paintball clips instead of a normal $2 hopper, do you have a VOX two way radio with extra earpiece (and another radio to communicate with too???).

Maybe you do have equipment as expensive as all that - but I'll bet you that you haven't put as much effort and innovation into your paintgun. Some of these Schmoes have worked hard achieving the look and getting their equipment to the state that it's in and believe that they deserve some recognition for what they've done - plus I find it interesting to read about cool stuff like that, it gives other people ideas too. (After all that, I still think the schmoe in the Feb '02 issue was crap and you should've found someone that 'little' bit more interesting.) :D

I love the way the Schmoes are directed to look just past the camera with their faces on "visionary mode".

"Mr Schmoe, can't you at least try to look menacing? No, don't even smile please. Just... Aw **** it. Keep still now!"

Whoa there horsey! Ok SOME! of the Joe Schomos have ****e kit, others like the guy you mention, take paintball back to the dayz of wargames and not a sport which it shoud really be addressed as. (I don't want to go into the paintball image so leave it there) That guy was a GI Joe wannabe, with his body armor and sniper rifle. (Can you honestly say there is such thing as a sniper in paintball?) Anyway I saw the picture, and I was'nt impressed, Sorry. I'm happy with my 100 quid Mag but I don't wear camo, I see Paintball as a sport not a wargame with guns. Sorry I went back to paintball image, it's late.

Each to their own, treat it how you like, as long as the sport prospers and everyone has fun!

Yeah, yeah, yeah - Of course, I wasn't trying to be really harsh or anything - and you're absolutely right about the mercenary look and G.I. Joe wannabe type figure.

Personally I think it's kinda funny, I have to admit I sometime think that the stuff like the night vision scope etc. are kinda cool too.

Although you are right about the fact that the wargame look is not the best image to have representing paintball - that, after all is what the core of the problems to do with major non-paintball related sponsorship and progression of the sport etc. lie... (I'm not gonna go into a massive political argument!). But no matter how hard you try, you're not going to eradicate that kind of image from paintball - ever, simply because of the fact that rec-ball is where most people have their first experiences with the game and rec-ball players do make up an over-whelming % of all PB players (I would guess at well over 50% at a rough estimate).

There are people who love that Special Op's wannabe thing that they've got going, and who's to stop them from enjoying themselves on the paintball field and escaping from their identity in their everyday lives for a couple of hours - to blow off some steam and have a good time playing PB, pretending they're Starship Troopers!!

So anyway, my main point is that these 'rec-ball schmoes' are here to stay and we can't very well ignore them in a magazine dedicated to the whole of paintball, and represents it in so many different countries. These people shouldn't be thought of a problem that should be eradicated (from a magazine) just because they don't play tourney and enjoy the more testosterone driven aspect of PB, these people should be thought of as core part of PB that contributes greatly towards the growth and strength of the sport, after all, when they talk their mates into coming along for their first game, a few years down the road one of those mates might just be a pretty high ranking tourney player that you guys just can't stop taking about!

Then think about that up-coming North vs. South game - how freakin' wargames like can you get!! It ain't one big tourney (although a 250 player team in a tourney would be kinda cool :D), but I'll bet you're bottom dollar that a MASSIVE % of the players there are regular tourney players or people who have played in tourneys. Yet - they aint the rec. ball schmoe - or are they? They're there for a laugh, to have a good time, and I'm sure part of the thrill of something like that is feeling like you really are in some kinda of warzone in a seriously messed up way.

Well there you go, later all :D

P.S. Your right about the sniper rifle! If u want an accurate sniper rifle get an angel and mount a site on that!

Sorry if this all seems a bit OTT, I've just got back home from work and I'm knackered - I'll come back in the morning to read this and I'll think 'what the hell was I ranting on about that for, for 20 mins at midnight last night??!!' :D ......as always....

It's also a matter of how far you can take things. Buddha 3 can tell you all about this fool who would come to our local field in his car, totally dressed up wearing a helmet, medals and everything.

Only goes to show you can go too far. Especially if the fool struts around the site displaying medals he doesn't even know what real war victims did to earn those. God that ticks me off.
