Still tricky

Even if we create an acceptable definition - i.e. must play X no. of times a year, must own at least own gun/loader and goggles - we have no way of getting hold of those figures cos no-one knows!

It's always gonna be guesswork to some degree, but I reckon my 100k or so North American ballers who care about what happens in the Pro leagues is pretty accurate. And that's a damn good figure for a sport so young.
U won't see me arguing with that !!!

What does the UKPSF use to define player? Probably someone who plays once a year in order to help bolster our figures ;)

TJ's figures are much more informative. I'd say playing 15 times a year makes you a 'player' heck some tourny guys I know only play once a month!

Would that 800-1000 figure be the total number of tourny players, who say participate in at least one tourny a year? or is is those that would look to attend multiple events in a year?
All multiple events. Some might only do 2-3 tourneys in a year though and RecBall (semi-seriously?) the rest of the time

I am not aware of any research into seriously infrequent tourney players (annuals/biannuals say) but I doubt there could be too many of them

One useful statistic would be the number of copies of PGI distributed in the UK every month. Are they just read by the Tourneyballing types I wonder?

My definition of a paintballer/"player". More than 6 tourneys and/or Recdays annually

OK, I'll give it a go.

It's not as much about the numbers of participants in each category as much as it's about the total amount of money spent in a year, and compared across the board. We can try to compare our sport to Snowboarding, mountain biking, and football/soccer but none of these sports requires consumables like ours. And for that reason paintball is a commodity driven entity. Not only in paint, but in the latest and greatest gear too.
I'd say that their is a fair number of renegade players in the US, I wouldn't say it's the largest population, but a respectable one in numbers only. They may buy one or two guns, and a few cases of paint in a year, but that only comes out to roughly $300-$400 total.
The group I'd say is the true bread winner, and thus the target for most companies' marketing efforts, is the 13-17 year olds that live at their local field, have mommy and daddy buy them the latest paintgun every 3 months, and hoses roughly 10 cases of paint through each one. Buys every add-on product that promises better performance, or looks cool, and plays in a local tournament at least every other month, and one big one once a year.
It's all about bucks!

Out of interest Mark, what do you make of the NPPL vs PSP vs Xball ideas?

Which one are Static likely to play or are more interested in?

(as I presume you're from the NPPL Static here - great season dude!),

Approx 50/50 Tourney/Rec Split... interesting

We don't define "player" at all, we just keep track of numbers of annual participants :)

Mark can't answer that as a large company who will remain nameless but appears in another current thread hasn't told them yet. :D

PS--Hey Mark, can I come too first weekend in December? I'll bring my "official" BC AMG Spyder. it rocks!;)
