Actually, poodles were originally a hunting breed, and this is why they have those ridiculous clips! Standard poodles (the big ones) have those stupid-looking pom-pom things on their legs - look closely & you'll realise the cover the joints so they don't get cold after they've got all wet retrieving game. The ones on their backs cover the hip joint, & the silly tufty bits on their tails are so you can see them wagging above the reeds in marshland.
Smaller poodles have more sensible clips, at least for showing anyway.
