Then voice from afar is correct..

Yep Pete, spot on.

If you are going to use the handhelds during the game, then theyu should be used to clear markers onto the field too. Have 2 per field so you can get the next teams ready to play without the usual long wait etc.

The one thing that does niggle me slightly, is these chronos. hand-helds or radars, are not cheap are they, and if I was a field owner/promoter, for 200+ euros, wou would want the things to be relaitvely accurate, they are safety equipment ffs!

Has anyone spoken to the manufacturers to get some ideas on improving the poor performance of the kit? might be about time we did, as i said before, they are for safety really!

How accurate are the radar chronies? Do we know for sure that the problem is with the handhelds! (probably not but all avenues should be explored when looking for answers)

All of them are accurate when used properly. Part of the problem. Radar chronies require some down field range to give accurate reads so when you're shooting into a barrel or whatever at 6 to 8 feet you're not getting a correct reading. (Don't know how Mil sets up their radar chronies but virtually every U.S. tournament has this problem.) And if hand helds instruction specify hanging by strap and everyone holds onto them instead the problem isn't in the equipment--it's in how it's misused.

which sort of makes it difficult to use in game to check a players velocity as it takes time to slip the strap over the end of the barrel, quite often the barrell will be tight up against the players bunker....

Couple points...

Handhelds, at least the ones I've seen, are rated to +/- 2% - which gives you a 12fps range, 95% of the time, at 300 fps. So you can expect a paintball going 300 fps to read anywhere from 294-306.

Handhelds, when used incorrectly, should only chronograph lower velocity than when used correctly. Radar chronographs chrono lower velocity the more your barrel is pointed away from the direction the chronograph is facing - so make sure your barrel is level and straight when you chrono on (or pointed way to the and up/down side if you're trying t get on the field hot ;)).

Everyone is subject to equipment with that level of accuracy. It's the players' choice how close to 300 they want to chrono given the accuracy of the devices used. If 10 more fps is more important to you than being safe from the precision/accuracy of the devices, then that's your call - and the same call every player has to make. Choosing how far to push your equipment is a common practice in many sports.

Either be a team that chronos low and gets the benefits of your opponents having their guns yanked occasionally, or be a team that choronos right on the limit and has the benefits of 10 more fps but loses a gun occasionally - same choice for everyone.

I suppose in a way what Raehl has just said makes it sound similar to the choices a forula one racing team has to make - either rev the engines to a safe limit but lose out on some top end speed, or rev the engines higher and risk one blowing up.

Yeah, I know there's no rules in F1 regarding the rev limit, but it helps make things clearer in my tiny mind.

Back to the topic tho, I still say that after 30 seconds is called, a single shot over 300 is time to pull the marker from the game.
As far as I'm concerned, the 30 second call is the start of the game, and any shots over 300 then means bye bye marker (or player, depenging on the hotness of the shot).

Simple solution for all those who are scared of their equipment not holding a consistant velocity and creeping - shoot the floor* on the 30 seconds call.

* I say floor, cos at 30 seconds, I will say 100% that there will be a judge with his goggles off somewhere on the field.
