Two from me both from playing with workmates.

Man cant fly
1st up, playing an indoor sight in London 2 level arena. I'd taken one of the upper platforms and seen spotted a nice bit of cover that would have let me dominate both levels, a quick dash later and I was well on my way to the cover when a co-worker apeared from an alcove and fired wildly in my direction. Still running I nipped behind some cover to my side, loosing my footing as I turned. Much to my suprise the floor ran out before the barracade did.

I landed badly on the floor below and my ankle went with a nasty crunch. Luckily enough for me I'd landed at an entrance to the safe zone by the feet of a marshal. Tryed to get up, screamed like a sissy & fell over. Luckily enough a couple of teammates saw my flying brick impression and came to help me.
Luckily it turned out to be nothing more than a very nasty sprain, still spent a few days off work & had a nice multi-coloured leg for a while.

Shoulders and tree's dont Mix.

Playing at an outdoor site in surrey Last game but one. I'd gotten myself to the rear of the oppositions team without being seen and I spotted a nice tree/pallet combo that would give me good angles onto all 5 of them. I ran for the tree as fast as I could, a few meters away I dove, knowing the floor was slippery enough for me to glide gracefully into cover.
Unfortunatly I didnt realise 3 very important things. 1. The floor was a lot slippery than I thought, 2. I weigh more than I thought. 3. A big tree root was hidden in the puddle around the tree.

I hit the floor and didnt loose much speed, as I tried to turn around to hit the tree with my back or feet I hit the root dislocating my shoulder & smashing my head into the tree. After screaming a bit I tried to move, as I did my shoulder popped itself back into the socket causing a bit more screaming.

Somehow my girlish yelling hadnt attracted the attention of the people I'd set out to eliminate & I managed to get 4 of them before the 5th got me.

Somehow (it involves stupididty, adrenaline & trying to cheer up my girlfriend who'd been bunkered sensless by someone) I managed to not only play the last game but hang the flag aswell (after which shock/pain kicked in, I turned white, burbled a bit and went to hospital)

The shoulder thing happened a year ago, after a lot of hopital visits I finally got my MRI results back last month. Turns out I'd smashed open the front of the socket and I've got to have surgery to re-build it (for some reason this may involve cutting bone off of my femur, which I dont really like the idea of).

The trouble is my shoulders stupidly weak now, I cant do half my old hobbys, it dislocates when I'm asleep (Not a nice thing to wake up with at 3am) and I'm pretty poor when it comes to running now, if I fall and have to catch myself with that arm it'll hurt like hell & I'll probably deafen anyone stood to close.

Few things.

Duff : isn't there a direct link to being the editor of PGI and self mutilation and injury? I seem to remember the LAST editor... oh, wait.... :) Let Ant know we wish him the best of luck.

A lot of you guys are tlaking groin hits, what I guess i'm looking for are stories of more permanent injury. Unless the impact rendered you sterile, that's not really the kind of thing to profile.

I'm tlaking "I missed work because of this." injury status.

See, I broke my ankle playing, hit a depressoin in the woods at full tilt, and the spikes I wore gabbed the ground. Crack. It just took a while to heal, and was in an air cast.

I fell off a cliff ledge at EMR, was chasing two guys and right off the wood line was a drop I dond't see. FEll onto my knee. Ended up landing on my left knee. Insteaf of my knee breaking, the shock traveled up my leg, into my back, and locked L3 and L4 together at a weird angle. When I tried to walk from the bedroom to the bathroom in my old apartment, and found myslefe on the kitchen floor screaming in agony, I knew I had a problem. The X-ray is amazing, believe it. That was a year of chiroprachtic care, and it still bothers me. It slips out on me on some occasions, and hurts like an SOB.

I was marshalling a game where a guy broke his Tib and Fib and the bone stuck out. Had to get him off the field in a Land Rover cos the ambulance couldnt make it down there.

Here's a story for you Tyger:

Whilst playing Woodland Pump at Holmbush a few years back I was running along going pretty fast (for me) and lost my footing

The first thing that hit the ground was the barrel of my marker which drove itself in a ways then locked solid

Problem was whilst the marker stopped moving I didn't and sort of rolled forward with the inertia whilst my finger remained still locked in the trigger guard

SNAP!

Probably because of the adrenaline (because I'd never pretend to be a hard-case by any means) I swapped fingers and played on. After the game I lined it up again (ouch!) taped it up with electrical tape and went out for the next match hoping to hell I didn't get shot in the hand ;)

I think I still have a photo of me with my fingers held together by blue electrical tape if you're interested.

As for prevention. I think you'd just have to not be as unlucky and/or clumsy as me :p

Yup, Famine got it right, Tib and fib at last years Spring Leg (geddit) of the Four Seasons seris at Hilton Park!

Game 3 Vs Pheonix 5.
Shot out my oposite, went 15 yrds forward at a run and heard a funny snapping noise. Fell to the ground, Screaming for the marshall to get an ambulancce, while the Lads played on around me :)

Once the shock had gone it was actually quite cool just liying there (they'd stopped the game by then). Big crowd formed around me, (until the medic pulled my shoe off anyway :) )luckily a player from Dragons Lair was there and he was a paramedic. So he did his stuff making sure no blood vessels had broken. I bummed a fag off one of the marshalls, whilst waiting for the ambulance. the paramedics arrived and I was duly carried off the field on an old door (just where that came from i have no idea) and into the safe area, where the friggin paramedics made me climb into the ambulance. (Angels of mercy my arse). to top it all off they had run out of entenox :( . So afer a nice trip to New cross hospital, where I nearly lamped the fecker who re-set my leg - WRONG - (they gave me lots of Entenox after that ;) ) and was told that they'd have to go in, 'cos it didn't break, it'd shattered!

Anyways by 4.30 I was taken into theater and came out with 18" titanium pin all way thru. It was worth it for a month off work, but I aint played my full game since

Oh, and i did get a free cap of pheonix :)

And Gurney, that shot musta bounced off your fat 'lil stubby, which is prolly why it hurt more :) It certainly was funny watching you roll around on the floor crying for 15 mins though ;) And did YOU get a free cap hehehe?

i was playing rec ball a while back at OTE, and the marshalls sounded game on. Me being my usual self decided to peg it towards the furthest bunker away from me, neglecting the pods and tree roots covering the floor. i tripped on a tree root, and fell onto a tree stump. now falling onto a treestump isn't so bad, but, just my luck, there was a 4 inchnail sticking out of it.

at this point, i would like to thank JT for their body armour, which saved my life.

the nail went across my chest, through my jersey and body armour and left a 5 inch gash, mmmmmm...... painfull.

i didn't realise what i had done till the end of the day (it was the last game) when i took of my somewhat punctured armour, there was quite an amount of blood, so i bandaged it when i got home and vouila, a large scar on my chest to impress the chicks.

next time i went to OTE i took out the nail myself :)

Don't know if you're still working on this article or not Tyger, but a couple of years ago I blew out my right knee playing paintball...MCL, ACL a nice dent in the end of my femur, and gobs and gobs of torn cartilage...the surgeon thought I was a football player that'd been clipped, then he realized I was a little old (31 at the time) and not quite big enough (5'10", 185#) to be a serious college football player...

Long story short, I blew it out in february, operated on in March, and I was playing again by May. I used to have the pre- and post-operative pictures of the inside of the joint, but I think they've been lost to time and moving from OK to FL. Email me if you're interested in the whole thing, and email Jeremy Garrett for his account, since he was there when it happened...he says to this day that he'd never heard my voice go that high before...
