You have to subscribe to Xbox Live to play on the Xbox Live network, XLINK (the network I mentioned playing on) is a free tunneling program for your PC or Mac that allows you to connect to other users using your computer's broadband connection. It basically uses your internet connection to connect to other users and fool your Xbox into thinking that you're playing a System Link game (a game usually played by people in one room with their Xbox's linked with a network cable, or through a router/hub). Xlink is a free program that allows you to do the exact same thing that Xbox Live does for a big subscription price.
