Liz,

Well it's all a bit confusing because the information is scant and some people have talked of the two in the same breath, if the PA cups not UKPL linked then apologies, just it's difficult to know who and what's going on this and next year. Teams who want to be seriously competitive need to think now for next year. Teams and players need much more information. I think any PA Cup would benefit if it attracted teams from all over the UK. I heard and read that it was a great success, but only a small amount of teams entered. If it is to gain credibility as a UK wide series, it must attract larger numbers.

However (back to), my original point still stands.

The UK must be competitive internationally in paintball terms, more UK teams should be thinking Millennium / International, not UK Domestic only. In retrospect, we (ML), should not have played or participated in 50% of the domestic tournaments we did, and should have concentrated on training for Millenniums. We paid at Campaign through lack of prep and only having one game style.

Being in a team is partly compromise, If I had my way, we'd play a handful of domestic tournaments 3 poss 4 Millenniums and a US event each year. The rest of the time spent on drilling, scrimmaging and having the whole team maintaining a high level of physical fitness. Playing tough competition and training is the only way to improve. This is how the UK game should be structured and developed. This also means teams have to attract players from a wide area, hence making a geographical association a bar to team skill development in (some not all cases).

Coaching, mentoring and Marshalling are the fundamentals that need to be in place before we start talking about whose UK no 1-100. A lot of ballers, are time and discipline short. A few nudges in the right direction can't help. The UK can and has produced quality Teams, Nexus, Tigers, Shock, Storm, what we need is to get some of these skills and knowledge into the general balling population. To date I've only seen Nexus doing this (this is not to say the others aren't willing, or have done before), but UK ballers need to know how to move, shoot and play the game at it's highest level. And whilst we can read all about it, we need tutoring.

It is my concern that we are in danger of losing site of the real game, and replacing it with the next best or easiest thing. Anyway what do I know, it's been emotional........

Can i start by saying what an excellant thread, this really has stirred a few people up, which however u side on this issue is a good thing!

Now my thoughts:
Firstly if ppl want to name their team after where they live great, go for it, i dont think it can do any harm, but there might be a fight over Manchester!

The only problem is that not all teams are only from the one area, so they should not be forced to be named after a particular area.
eg Arsenal from London, but it doesnt matter!

If ppl do call themselves (insert one of Stongl's random team names) after a town maybe it will bring more publicity, hopefully so, but like others said the name isnt the be all and end all, much more important is the game itself!

Like has been mentioned before, I'm not from Lincoln and most of Manchester United aren't from Manchester.
We play and train as serious as you suggest Stongl and we totally support things like the Nexus training weekend and we agree with you on the need for more serious commitment to training by UK teams, thats one of the main ideas behind Lincoln Storm!
The advantage of affiliating to a place is that hopefully we can get some sponsorship/coverage from local companies and media which we wouldn't get if we were called "The Turnips" or whatever. Then we can use this extra backing to fund our aditional training and entry to international tournies etc.

MrDan,

Part of the reason for this thread is to stop you Somanc crew walking off with everything next year. If it were'nt for the 2.5 hr commute from Essex to Manchester, I'd come and play up with you lot.;) ;) ;)

As we are hoping results from this will bring in out of industry sponsors which will go on to helping us play MS next year and hopefully stateside the season after.

If putting 'Macclesfield' in the name helps then so be it.

I think you're gonna confuse people with this m'dear. It's the paintball association league that's attracting outside sponsorship and giving prize money. The CPL (central paintball league) is just the 7 man version of the midland masters.

Tell you what, lets see which series gets the most sponsorship and media attention in 2004, then we'll see if the PA league is a good idea.

You can't make a sport like ours more accessible without sponsorship and winning the media over is the only way we can interest outside business.
Roll on the PA league, if you don't like the idea, don't sign up. If you're happy to stay with a "Sunday league" type sport then that's fine. I'd like to play a real, respected sport and I'm pretty sure we are going to be doing that soon thanks to the imagination and effort of Gillie and Hatts.

So thanks again and see you in the PA league.

Oh and congratulations to those Southern players who travel up North to play................... I believe you mentioned MM series as up north. Does that put Nottingham on the Scottish Borders then?

i thought of this too, but i the end who cares if there are 10 different teams all from manchester (or whereever) the affect of having the town/city name in the team name is the same.
are any of the manchester teams planning a name change next season? (we are by the way)

The CPL will also be encouraging teams to use geographical team names, The idea being being to attract news coverage, OOIS etc etc

Stongl - you seem to be suggesting that the geographical names is the PAs answer to all paintballs problems! Can I suggest that you do a little research on the subject before you start sounding off about how there are other more critical needs?
There has been plenty of info about the PA Cup available in various places, including info before and feedback after the event on these very forums. Go back & read some of it. Yes, geographical team names WAS a big part of it, and I'll go into the wider implications of that later. But the other main purpose was to show more professionalism - in reffing, in how the teams were organised and run, how the event was run including it's promotion. For example, AFAIK this was the only UK tounament outside of the Millenniums where players had to register for their teams and couldn't transfer mid-event.

The idea behind the team names was to give non-players a sense of association with a particular team. More spectators and more local interest outside of the sport will bring in non-paintball industry money, and that means that events have more money to pay for better and more professional reffing and the teams have more money so they can afford all this training they need. More local coverage will bring more newcomers into the sport, which I don't think anyone can suggest isn't good for UK paintball.

You started this thread in what seemed to be a slightly tongue in cheek way, but seem to have gone on in a much stronger manner, accusing the PA of all kinds of things e.g.
" By regionalising the teams you've done nought to improve the sport, just pushed a dull male dominated game into some local rags, as a mere local interest story." Hmm, so BBC is a "local rag"? And do you think someone like Gillie Hatton (and me for that matter) are not working to get the sport less male-dominated?
"and scrambling up (which does concern me) established teams to achieve that seems counterproductive to achieving this aim". Interesting, as 5 of the 11 teams who competed did so ARE existing teams (though some rebranded for the event) with a couple of others being made up of site refs etc who weren't part of existing teams but now intend to stay together. I could also point out that the first 3 places were filled by "scratch" teams (Manchester, Nottingham & Newcastle). Oh, and you refer to Nexxus as one of the current great UK teams (rightly so IMHO) - remember how THEY were formed?

The PA is trying to be a start in the right direction. No-one has said it is the be all and end all of improving and promoting the sport in the UK, but at least someone has stood up and tried to get the process going (at quite a large personal cost as well). If every time people try to improve things all they get is someone who clearly isn't in posession of all the facts comes on here and starts to slate them, then pretty soon no-one will bother - is that really what you want?

confusion

the reason we are so confused is cos the information as to who the ukpl or pa cup/ league thingy is/are/want hasnt been disseminated, well not to us southern monkeys anyway.

Maybe a few posts on here as to who everyone is and the plans for next year.

I myself havnt got a clue, like on the field really.
