Why do people need 18" barrels???
They don't!!! Anything above 14" is a waste!!

Front players use smaller barrels so they can tuck in better.
Back players use longer barrels as they are supposedly more accurate.

I said suposedly!!!!!

Shall I ask Andrea about that 8" comment Simon????

Ask andrea if you like.. :D

As for barrels, I've used 18, 12 and 10, and can't say I've noticed any difference (apart from sticking the 18" barrel in the mud more than once  )

I think paint to barrel match makes a lot more difference than length.

barrel length

Hi There!

I would say that the length of the barrel is only important when you line up your marker on your target. Some people like longer barrels, and some not. But for front guys, i think is essential to have a shorter one. A 14" barrel is probably more than enough. What is realy important is it's barrel to paint match.

Hi Richard

I used to use a 18" barrel (freak and boomstick) as a back player, now i use a 12" Freak teardrop, it not quite as accurate as the 18" but it has the advantage of not being so long that you have to rest it on your front players shoulder:p

Decide where you are playing, then get the kit to match:
Front= small fast firing marker, small tank and short barrel

Back = Accurate consistant marker, large air tank, what ever barrel length takes your fancy and large overdraft to pay for the paint you'll use keeping the opp heads down:D

See ya in the middle

Accuracy and Barrel Length

Jan,

The article was reffering to the acceleration of a paintball:

"In theory they also help with accuracy but that's another post."

I am aware that as soon as the porting begins, the acceleration effectively stops, however:

"Under some circumstances there is a good reason to use a short effective length barrel. Short barrels cut off the acceleration abruptly by venting and this has the effect of tightening up the shot to shot velocity variation."

So the porting does help the 'up/down' accuracy if you like, what I am chiefly concerned with (since I'll be getting an air system on my Cocker, 'up/down' consistency shouldn't be a problem, its really left/right consistency that I'm on the look out for.

Since my post I have been on a practice day at 6E with the Killer Clowns (thanks guys, I think I have most of the paint out of the nooks and crannies from my gun now, those 4 on 1 drills got REAL messy:p) and we did an accuracy drill involving shooting at polystirene cups at varying lenghts, I found my accuracy with a 10" stainless barrel really good (the paint fit was superb, as was the paint) hitting 4 out of 5 targets.

Can I expect even better accuracy from 12"+?

Is there anyone who actaully knows about the physics of this? Isn't there a "Physics of Paintball" website?

Thanks to all those who have posted their experience, I suppose the answer is that even if I do get a 10" front, I can always buy a longer one later they're only about £30 if I am struggleing accuracywise.

Richard (18" Boobstick, I'm feeling somehow inadequate all of a sudden) Kirke

Barrel length effecting accuracy is absolute rubbish!

How you aim it with the longer barrel is not though i.e. if you look at the end of your barrel when you aim.

look at it this way if lengh really made a differance wouldn't every back player use an 18" ??

The only advantage to a long barrel is for bending sup air bunkers out the way! :D
