as a team name.

That's a team name on the list of novice teams for the Millennium series' Dutch Masters.

If I had any influence I would demand that the team either change their name or drop out.

Whatever ya think about Political Correctness, in many cases it's all about Polite Consideration. I can tell you unequivocally that most any Jewish person is offended by that name, especially attached to a German team.

Maybe these people don't mean any harm or haven't reflected on the offensiveness of that name. But it's past time to wake up! Such naiveté is dangerous.

This really is my face...
I see your point but....

To be honest Im not even sure what that name insinuates and what relevance it has to Jewish history (the holocaust maybe?), but then you could say that any name means something to someone, It would be easy to be offended at everything. Even our name could be taken as an example if someone found that we are taking the mick outta people described as control freaks who could be genuinely offended.

I think anyone intelligent enough to post on this site has the capacity to do a few minutes of research to understand what the words "Final Solution" means in German and Jewish (and other victims of genocide and concentration camps) history.

I think I'll go see what a search gives.

Agreed, it's not exactly the most tactfull of team names to say the least.

Plus it could be argued that it's in breach of the Mill rules about "decorum" and wearing offensive logo's/words etc at the event.

There weren't so many hits that gave clear answers.

In a nutshell, the final solution was the Nazi decision to exterminate all the "ethnically impure" or "human vermin" etc. rather than continue to use them for slave labor. Some documents were supposed to show that a cold calculation was made comparing the cost of keeping the captors alive and using their labor with what it would cost to simply exterminate them. The "Final Solution" was the decision for the holocaust, however the decision came forth.

Therefore that name is a painful reminder to any Jewish person and to many who have a basic knowledge of recent history.

Final Solution

Sometimes I think polictical correctness has gone overboard, but not in this case. Calling a team Final Solution is just F***ing tasteless!

Have you considered posting on the European players forum and seeing if those guys may be able to help. Perhaps if they had a word with the millenium officials this could be rectified?

I could be wrong but I don't think that name, Joy Division, says anything to the vast majority of Jews and others.

And although it doesn't give licence, one of the founding members is a Semite with very dark skin. He didn't seem to be offended by the name. Again, that doesn't justify an offensive name.

We could simply ask: Is anyone offended by Final Solution? Does anyone think it is a breach in "decorum"? Is anyone offended by Joy Division?

Personally,

I think both names are ill thought out and could cause major problems for both teams and potentially the sport...If Super 7s does get picked up by TV, I could see a few execs having problems with the name Joy Division and the connotations that surround it...but then Joy has been around for a long while and I suspect the guys would just change to Team Joy if anyone complained and it caused problems...

Maybe someone up above should have a word with Final Solution to nip that problem in the bud...it does seem like a spectacularly stupid name choice.

Depends.

Can I enter a tournament with a team caleld "Cult of the dead carpenter"? Can I call my team "We beat (insert ethnic group here)"? How about a team name of "Kane Kounty Konservatives" and have "KKK" on our jerseys? Oh yeah, that'd fly.

There's a group of players in Wisconsin who revel in the German imagery, going as far as to wear WW2 replica uniforms. I let it slide, mostly because the game I see them at is one I enjoy and being thrown out for beating a guy down based in the nazi symbols he wears is not conductive to good relations. Besides, in the USA people have the right to wear anything they want to, but I don't have the right to randomly beat them for it.

I think we've been over this before on these board when we talked about scenario games that "re-create" famous battles and let participants dress up and pretend to be (among other things) german SS soldiers and the like. My take hasn't changed.

If "Joy Division" is named after the BAND of the same name, then that's a case of bad research. If not, then they'll have some answering to do.
