Morning Mister Pun

`Have the bruises gone down yet? I thought I'd give it a week .
So now you see how it's going to be, the Roman army under my command will be invicible! (using any method) so bring on your poor excuse for weapons and feel the force of the Imperius Romanus.

Yep the bruises have gone from when the other side cheated !
But you forgot to mention what happened in the next game when they couldnt cheat.
The bit where i took 3/4 of the other side out single handed.
Now if this is how the roman army is going to be, we might as well let most of the barbarians stay around the bar-b-q.

false sense of security

Yeah that's the way to be you make all the wimpish barbarians stay by the fire, keep them warm, as for you taking 3/4 of a team out I find that very hard to believe how can you see where 3/4 of the other team are from behind your own base? Are you sure it wasn't your own team surrendering? With you in charge of anything to do with the barbarians I am really looking forward to it!

I'm from the US and I was wondering if games in the UK are as disorganized as they are here?
Often you will see small groups of players wandering about the field with no idea what is going on, how they can help their side score more points or where they could go to really do some good for their side.
Even with radios, it becomes so disorganized that even members of the same team can't find one another on the field for hours. (well they know where their teammates are but most often they end up spread out across the field.)

I've found that many of the players do not feel like they are really a part of the game and they don't have any idea how they can contribute more..... So....

My team has begun to use a system to allow those players who want to be more involved in missions or field control, etc.. to do so. So far it has worked out very well.

I'm not familiar with how your games are structured so I don't know if it would work within your scenarios, but if your games are close to the way ours are run then it might help.

It's not just devised to run up points, but also to allow players who otherwise might feel disconnected to the game or "out of the loop" to be as involved as they wish to be, while still allowing them to play the kind of game they paid their money to play.

I'm very proud of the comments we received, after the games, from the players who go out of their way to tell us that they really felt like they were involved and for the first time they really felt like they had contributed to the game for their side.

Normally a 24 scenario begins around noon. Everyone charges out onto the field fighting for field control. Meanwhile the Command post is receiving "missions" about every 15 minutes that have to be accomplished to score points. So as each mission comes in the Commander has to grab whatever players he can to send out on the mission.... back on the field...
teams who took off together are now spread out as some members moved up, some got shot out, and some (not able to find their teammates) decide to join the mission squad and take off that way. ... and so the day goes on.

Is there a site that would explain to me how your scenarios are run and the rules they use?

Anyone interested.. email me at rtd101@comcast.net

Well I was at Kenny's revenge last year and that was organized better than the attacks on Iraq....... England aint that big and organizers try to avoid clashing with each other... scenario games/big games aren't as frequent as in the US, so when a site runs one they pull out all the stops.

One of the problems we have had is trying to organize the players without forcing them into a quasi-military outfit.
Everyone spends good money to play and they don't like the idea that they HAVE to go here or HAVE to stand guard duty or whatever (and rightly so. They paid their money and are entitled to play the scenario in whatever way they want to play.... but at the same time the Commanders need people who will run missions, guard the bases, help with radio contact... not to mention covering the flanks or holding postion to maintain field control.

So what my team, RTD, has been doing is set up a completely voluntary system, where the players sign up on a Mission Squad (we set up 8 squads to cover 1 mission each every two hours) and their only real responsibility is to be at the base at a predetermined time (roughly once every two hours) and run that mission together. Then after the mission is done, they are free to go do whatever they want.

Most of the time (even though many are strangers prior to becoming squad members) they end up playing together and become very effective units rather than just wandering about as small unconnected groups.

Because the Squad has a purpose and gets the chance to meet new people, even single players feel more connected to the game and they all know they are contributing to their side. And another benifit is that since there is a constant flow of players in and out of the base to run the missions, it creates a sort of mobile security force to fight off attacks.
And even if a team gets separated, they know they will meet up at the base to cover their scheduled mission.

And this is done by the Commander, (and his crew) not by the producer. It has given us a big advantage at the games we have used it.

There are some details and methods that help it work, but mainly I was curious if it would work with your scenarios.

Do your scenarios use "missions" or "objectives" that have to be accomplished to score game points?
Are they given to the Commanders at reqular intervals?
If so, do they require a specific number of players and/or "speciality" characters to complete them? (e.g. a demolitions character to "blow up" a building or an "engineer" to rebulid a bridge)

Or as some producers here, are the Commanders given field or storyline objects to accomplish and it is up to them to decide how and when to do them?
Both types are played here. Of course the latter is more along the lines of a Big Game than a Scenario Game.

Morning RTD

The game will be based on the fall of the roman empire with objectives to achieve and misions to complete, we have devised it a long the lines of a story, that is being witten for us. To help this along there will be marshalls in the field that will prompt players in to what the will or can be doin. It will be arranged to have fun mainly, and as you say, if you have paid as much as the players will be paying, they are entitled to have a good time. The game will be a 12 hour extravaganza, with barbeque, drink and indusrty stalls on site.
Delta the main team, from which the marshalls and main characters (the 2 generals) will be taken have at least 4 years experience of scenario games, having to been to several in britain and 4 in the US (Wayne dollacks 24 hour scenarios)

SO if your in the area by all means come down and see how we do it. Obvoiusly I know that New Jersey To Leeds UK is a rather long way, but hey, we went to Ocala 4 times!

Thanks for the comments mate

Regards

Well it won't be soon, but I've always wanted to visit my relatives in Wales.
My mother's mother's family name is Griffiths and there are supposed to be a few relations of my great-grandfathers still there.

Here is a link to the membership page of my web site. On that page is a link to the Mission Squad System....
You never know when it or some part of it might be of help.
