...and besides, the kit then goes to the evidence room. My stereo from the car I had when I was 18 is still in the police station (to the best of my knowledge). That was about 12 years ago, too.
In reality, I agree, and would likely call the police if I caught someone stealing my stuff. I wouldn't expect police to do anything, really, if I didn't catch the thieves in the act, though. Finding thieves would require more hours and effort than they would deem worthwhile, so looking out for serial numbers is the best way I can see.
Still, I hope JD catches his thief... it might be bad press and all, but if we got a reputation for being savage to thieves, maybe someone would think twice.
I feel the best thing is for victims to report serial numbers to a www database. Then, when a gun comes into a shop for work, the shop can casually run a quick check to see if it is listed as stolen. Wouldn't be had to set up, as long as everyone supported the same theft registry.
