This actually highlights a serious point in paintball, as we have never had to really consider the subject of fitness.
The way the game is developing now means that any team who has the technical requirements already in the bag can now improve their performance by instigating a regime of fitness.
If you are seriously intent on winning a tournament then it is a long haul all the way thru the prelims, semis, and finals.
Fitness, in terms of enduring that task will undoubtedly help as will short term fitness in terms of speed when playing.
What we must never lose sight of is that it is no use being the fittest team in the world if your techniques suck.
I will fall back on one of my oldest and well-used phrases that I tend to use and it is, 'I ain't seen no kid that can outrun my Emag'.
You get my point I hope, you might run like you got a squib up your ass but I am gonna nail you at 300 fps if your techniques are sloppy.
As paintball develops over the next few years, fitness will become more and more of an issue, that's for sure and a necessity that will I think, finally force Ledzy into retirement :)
Get fit by all means, but don't forget the basics guys !!

Maybe this'd be a good qu to put to Robbo: Do you think you play better now that you're a steroid-injecting behemoth, or would you say you had more game in your more shrimp-like days? I guess the muscle does help put more power into those short bursts of speed, but does it leave you more out of breath after a run?

Qu to all: what's the perfect build for a top all-round paintballer?

Hmmmmm, I'm not sure I like the description of 'steroid injecting behemoth' because it suggests some monster like creation. However I will ignore for the time being your inappropriate use of words and answer the question :- some simple and unarguable trusims are, 'The bigger you are, the bigger the target', 'The faster you are, the harder you are to hit', 'The fitter you are, the longer you can maintain peak performance'.......go figure !!!

Well, given that Mr Big is the head Honcho of this here site and PGI mag, for both of which Robbo does some work, I don't think he really needs to worry that much.

I'd say physical strength is helpfull to a point. It helps if you have the strength to make short speedy runs. It helps when your legs have the strength to enable you to change direction 90 degrees while running in one step (something most people are unable to do, by the way). It also helps a little if you have the power in your arms to be able to hold your marker up for extended periods of time.
I would say that strong legs and stamina are the most important here. But like Robbo said, it's no use if you don't know what to do with it. Just having strong legs doesn't grant you the power to run fast and be agile.

Phoenix I am sure my Team would welcome you to join us in a Game. Since we are all American. Drop me and e-mail when you get a chance ---> thero0ster@yahoo.com

I would like to add that it is very difficult to define fitness. A marathon runner will not be winded after doing ten laps around a 10 man field, but he is likely to be gasping after a short series of sprints. If, on the other hand, you''re able to do the 100 meters faster than Ben Johnson, there's a good chance you won't even survive a marathon.
I'd say that soccer players might have the sort of stamina you'd want in a baller. The abillity to be active over an period of time, combined with short bursts of increased activity.

Too true - and muscle strength is only part of the story too: let's not forget tendons and ligaments! Too weak and they'll tear, too short and tucking up behind cover is going to feel like doing 10 minutes of low horse stance for the first time (roughly equivalent of someone pouring petrol on your thighs and setting it alight!)

I think you need more upper body strength to be a top class paintballer than you need in football though, for two reasons:

a: you need to hold yourself in difficult positions for long periods of time.
b: you need to be able to hold a gun up for long periods of time and keep it steady. if you weaken or get those lactic shakes, you're not gonna hit a barn door.

Meant no harm by calling you a behemoth, Pete. I just thought it preferable to talking about your rippling bronzed oiled torso. That would have sounded a bit, umm, gay. You know what I meant though!
