it can be based on other 'event-based' sports;

marathon running, bicycle, etc.

None of these are run by partipant owned leagues - or similar systems.

Marathon running is governed by the International Atheletics Federation, which is the umbrella of a club/federation type system.

Bicycling (roadracing) - at least at Pro level, is operated entirely like paintball, where private concerns run events, that teams can then enter.... and several team owners run events which their own teams enter.... albeit not the biggest events, as they are a full time job in themselves.

bicycling here in the states has a national federation which runs as described.

Intl marathon meets - yes, other track and field, no

however, that's besides the point. There ARE numerous existing models to choose from.
