I agree with all that Jay said but would like to expand on his comments about hydration. On a 'normal' day under 'normal' conditions (ie UK summertime) water will be fine but as things start to heat up and you start to sweat you need to replace fluid and fast. General tip - if you feel thirsty you are already waaay to late and are already deydrated.

As Shamu and tm167 have stated water AND something is a good idea. ;) personally i would recommend Lucozade (the flat stuff not the fizzy but this does get expensive. If you can afford it then buy it in powder form and make it up yourself. Instructions should be on the pack but you want weak Lucozade to rehydrate and normal concentration to refuel after exercise. In normal concentrations it can be quite sickly and can take some getting used to...

If you're a cheapskate like me then Hi-Juice squashes are good (contain a reasonable amount of sugar but not silly amounts) and are more interesting than plain water. To help aid absorption into the body add a pinch or two of salt (even a relatively small amount will still affect the taste - it's a case of see how much you can put in without gagging ;) ) If you just drink large quantities of water it'll just go straight through you.

Final tip is to make sure that you are drinking a little and often (same goes for food on game day) and remember what i said about feeling thirsty = it's too late by then!

food n sh.....

I normally tend not to eat too much when I play because of running about and stuff. However I do drink lots of water and try to grap a cereal bar if we have quite a big gap between games.

Better. :D

What I meant though is that I THOUGHT I said pretty much what you did. I could have been wrong though, so if you felt some of my post was in error, I would not have mind being corrected...

On the subject of fat burners, I always felt that ephedra made me a little too "twitchy". I haven't used any fat burners of any kind for the last year or so. Not that I made a conscious decision not to, it just seemed like one less hassle to shop for.

I guess that the banana and water thing is pretty common, and that's been my choice for eats during competition. I like pad thai or rice with soy before, chicken and fish after. If it is morning division, I like melon slices with salt for breakfast.

A friend of mine used to bring this powder that helped with retaining water, but I don't recall the name... sound familiar to anyone?

Before getting on the Monday mornign flight home, McGriddle, all the way.

One of the best things you can drink to hydrate yourself is actually Pedialyte. It's designed specifically for kids and the balance of electrolytes and sugar is just about perfect for sports hydration. Tastes kinda funky and it's more expensive than Gatorade but it works great.
