CPL Coaching, Dump It

You only have the urge to yell out if (a) you like the team/player getting mugged or (b) you dislike the team/player doing the mugging. If you're just a neutral spectator, I think it's fun to see people get bunkered.

I dunno,
I think the crowd love to scream and shout, its their way of participating in the game.

And anyone who thinks that coaching has a detremental effect on either the skill of the players, or the spectacle of the game, should go watch some NXL...

I agree %100. Coaching and crowd interference has no place in paintball. It's completely against the nature of this game.
Want to run around the bleachers at a pro finals game at a millenium or NPPL event with your finger on your lips going 'shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'?

Before I start I will make it very clear that I have never played in a game where coaching has taken place. I have reffed in an xball exhibition match and have been on countless sidelines at events where it has been allowed.

Coaching is a fundemental advance and is at the heart of where the sport will need to go if it is to breakout of the situation it now finds itself in. The sport, in relation to the public and their perception and awareness, has gone as far as it can in its present form. Coaching is one of the keys to making it more than just a niche hobby in the eyes of the masses. You must have something that will grab the publics attention (we have that in the the xball format - now we need a way for the audience to identify and participate. A way that this audience of non paintballers can somehow express their emotions and sentiments while watching their favourite team.

bugger i now have to go to the shops back in 5 mins!!!!.......

I have and still do.....what you are confusing is this, you may see a dynamic game with coaching but you have no reference point, just imagine what it would be like without coaching...when you do that, you will then have a more sophisticated opinion.

I'm against coaching in games i can't realy comment on the big boys of the game and coaching within CPL etc, there are enough people with more info to sort that out. Why not let the crowd shout out, but having specific people on the sideline going wait wait wait, move is't the next step of the game.

One of the arguments for coaching is that it keeps the game running so there are no points where people are unsure of who is left etc. (Thats the job of the team to comunicate, if the pros can't do it then who can?) I think coaching can actualy hinder a game, as people won't want to do the huge run to the snake just for some sideline jockey to shout where they are so they have to sit on there arse when they could stay in another bunker and shoot.

Wasn't it said the RL were not doing as well out side X-ball events due to the lack of coaching? I'm sure i read that somewhere, if paintball is realy going to make it to TV it is down to the players on field, Thumbs up for skill and comms. Thumbs down to team with the most sideline monkeys. Its already been said that teams have won or lost games due to coaching shouldn't it be down to the team themselves to do it?

are you saying everybody that agrees with coaching " like me " has an unsophisticated opinion?

Back!

Anyways. The problem maybe that there is no distinction between coaching and crowds cheering on their team. I have spoken to a number of guys that play the cpl on Brit teams and they have all said that it is very difficult to hear any specific shouting and that they rarely pay attention to it because it distracts from the game itself. Could this be a clue as to why we feel so aggrieved by the effect of coaching?

I also have issues witht he fact that most of the problems stem from coaching directed at the player in the snake and his back corner. Might the simple solution be to put this barricade on the side of the field opposite to where the crowd are thus limiting the number of people who can gain access to coach. The run throughs and movement on the opposite side of the field is just as interesting and the coaching may have less of an overall effect.

The other point that was raised was that people complain that there are always large numbers of people cheering on the opposition team and that they push, shove and drown out the brit players that are trying to coach their team. These players have to travel just as we do, may be not quite as far but still. They are also not always part of the team that they are coaching. So what is the actual proble here. The fact is brit teams do not enccurage the other lower brit teams not involved in the cpl to help or that we are under represented at foreign events. Either way its our fault and not theirs.

The other point is that from my experience i very rarely see gangs of opposition coaches. Merely a select few that are well positioned and know exactly what to say and when. Maybe half a dozen at most.

Coaching is great, we just need to stop thinking of paintball like it was in the woods where people took pride in sneaking up on people. Run throughs and coordinated plays are better. Hell get rid of the snake all together.
