I think you have to ask the following questions:-

a) Why was she there in the first place?

b) Why did she have in her possession bubble making articles?

c) Why was she blowing bubbles toward the policemen ?

These are not arbitrary or accidental actions, they are quite deliberate and therefore need explaining ...
Pete, i can answer your first two. She was protesting against the G20 summit and, following the previous days violence, the protestors were ensuring that they distanced themselves from the handfull of morons who had caused trouble. They did this in a similar vein to the 60s anti vietnam protesters with bubbles rather than flowers.
As for why she chose to blow bubbles near the cops I can only summise, from the reactions of the activist and the female cop, that she didn't think a 6'+ cop would react so agressively.

Yes I agree with people that this was probably a bit ott but then these guys get treated like **** from everywhere - the public and their superiors. These guys have lost alot of respect that they had and people don't fear them anymore. When I was growing up (sound like an old granddad here) I was taught they are there to protect the public and deal with bad guys. Now they are seen in alot of youth's eyes as some dick who wants to stop me having 'fun'. I'm not surprised they get a bit pissed sometimes..
You can tell alot about people by what they are like.

My experience with police has been very mixed. My friend was beaten up by a policeman in Wigan. I went to explain that he wasn't involved involved in it only to be set about myself. We were released after they realised their mistake. He took it up with police complaints but unfortunatelly the torch with the DNA was 'lost' during processing. On another occasion I managed to pin down a pissed up guy who was walking along with a hammer smashing car windows and phone boxes. the police were called and said they were on the way from the station (5 min tops in traffic never mind blues and 2s) I had to let him go after 25 minutes as his mates were gathering. I got a call 24 hours later asking me to make a statement, no other contact in the meantime despite it being made clear I was sat on the guy during the original call. On another occasion I was tending to a mate who had been badly beaten in an assault. Two cops attended and were immediately threatening and aggressive to both of us. I was threatened with arrest and they were suggesting he got what he deserved. You should have seen the change in response when I told them he was a policeman himself and worked at the local station - on a closer look they recognised him and the response escalated like you wouldn't believe. The aggressor was arrested within half an hour, ultimately charged and locked up. Would I have seen the same response from if he'd not been a serving officer - I doubt it.

She has it all wrong, if your going to go on a spree, you don't use a single bolt action device.

Id of taken my automatic multi barrelled monster and blown them away from a distance.

J, I gotta say mate, this is a pretty naive statement here; from what i know of you, you're one of the world's good guys and not prone to outbursts of any kind that I know of and certainly not violent or of bad character but ......I'm gonna have to bring you to book on this one.

She has chosen to blow bubbles to bait, antagonise and ultimately provoke a reaction, and the more intense the better .. and she does it in this way because .. the act of blowing bubbles is generally seen as the domain of a child and therefore is seen as completely innocent ... but, even though its normal incidence is that of a child's indulgence, it can be used [by an adult] to annoy and ultimately antagonise .. and she knows this very well ... that's why she chose the bubbles.

It basically sets the scene for ANY reaction from the police is always gonna be seen OTT and inappropriate.
Put it this way, do you consider rain malicious or antagonistic?
Of course not, but when the Japs allegedly used it to torture prisoners of war ...the very same act changed its nature because of the context of its occurence.... and so does the act of blowing bubbles ..

The currency of that act was antagonism .. and if you know the intent, the act itself becomes somewhat academic because the more they do it [even thought its an 'innocent' act] the longer they are getting away with antagonising, and being seen to ... it was always gonna be a matter of time before he bit ... and she didn't like it when he did ....

Pete, The problem is that none of us where there and we don't know the intent. Thats why I said 'I can only summize'. I don't know what her thoughts were, i never will, but her reaction indicates that she is very surprised and upset by the response. i honestly believe she is the one that is extemely naive and the cop has been over the top. He doesn't ask her to stop, it's straight in with the threats of arrest. How much effort does it take to start off with 'Please stop that, it's annoying'. It certainly wouldn't be on you tube and if it was I would be arguing that any escalation to the point OB started from would be justified.

BTW Bon, the Toronto police may consider that device a WMD

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and moves like a duck ... then it is a duck !

If you elect to ignore the signs then this is a failing on your part J, not mine mate.

Edit I have adjusted my Freudian slip and so it reads a little better if a little less interesting :)

Spot the freudian slip.

Imo, she has silly hair and is baiting the police, she gets a fair warning which, in its own right, is a sign of respect.
