alex SP did not invent electronic triggers....they patented them and are making a lot of money out of them....they are creating a monopoly in the marketplace which is technically against US law as can be seen with the case of microsoft....

A patent will not be granted if prior art exists: Ie if there is a similar system availiable on the market or in the public domain then the patent application will be rejected. I belive the patent was applied for before the shocker was released. Patents exist in every industry where products are manufactured and are required make r&d worthwhile. No one complains that viewloader patented the infrared eye for its 1st VL system.

Everything you buy will most likey have a patent on some aspect of it.

alex seriously go and do some background reading on this. Prior art does exist i believe but the patent was granted. I think it was an extension on the patent you mention.....

someone with more knowledge will explain it better than i ever could...

I remember reading an interview with Adam Gardner in the complete Guide to Paintball (he stated that they have a patent on the electronic trigger system) that was published in 1999. When reading it i checked the US patent site and there was a patent for electronic triggers by them then. This patent does not seem to be on the US patents site anymore so perhaps this new patent is an enhancement of that as you say but they definately did have patent on the electronic trigger years ago before AKA started producing elctronic guns. If that is the case then Smartparts is easily within its legal rights to file a case against the company as they were directly breaching the patent.

Does anyone know where there is a copy of the original patent?

One thing to mention is that the Eblade and (i'm almost sure) Angel markers are covered by UK/Worldwide patents which are a lot harder to get due to the strict regulation and mountains of red tape in the UK.

I think if people want to boycott smart parts they should, also if they want to tell others then let them, dont bitch about it.

SP have annoyed a lot of people. i personally think that a boycott would have little affect financially but maybe it will get the point across.

Its mostly the tourney players losing out with all of these patents, as we have far fewer new guns to choose from, im sure i dont need to remind anyone that we lost two more types this week,
and how long have the others (not already in league with sp) got left?
