I think people are getting their wires crossed over the differing motivations that players have. There is a major difference between wanting to win, and wanting to be the best.
Nexus for example, could play Div 1 at a Millennium, smash teams all weekend, prance around on the podium etc etc. If they were a team of players who want nothing but to get the high from winning- that'd be great. But the objective is to be the best, and 'dumbing down' so you can win does not achieve that objective and it would not satisfy pro players.
It really depends on what a player wants from the game. A player who wants to play to an expert standard will ultimately have a personal drive to work on his game and make many sacrifices in order to achieve it. A player who just wants to feel good by winning does not have to go through the pain to get their satisfaction BUT they will never gain the respect of those who have.
Frikkin hell, the universe really is a strange place when we both agree on two consecutive posts Matski but to extend the idea of your post, I would go so far to say that we could describe one set of participants as true sportsmen and the others as wannabee sportsmen who are going thru the motions, till it suits them.
As soon as we get our asses out of the woods and don that tourney jersey, we begin a journey of competition, not only with other teams but also with ourselves.
The merest idea that a player would put a self-imposed cap on his arena of play purely because he wants to strut at a lower level is a joke if he wants to be considered a sportsman.
He is more akin to a playground bully in my eyes; I just can't see the point when being recognized as a pro means so much more than any first place Am title.
And if this point is in contention, then ask yourself this, just how many sponsors of the NPPL pro teams who are not winning anything are pressurizing them to drop down in the hope they might get on a lower level podium???
Nuff Said !
