Bad for the sport?

You make my point exactly. When you try to qualify woods fields as hybrid fields you are suggesting a hybrid field has the mixed characteristics of the woods and concept fields as if this mythical hybrid was required to justify playing in the woods at all. Fact is a paintball field in the woods is invariably a hybrid field and anybody but you means precisely that when they say "woods field."
You have to be specific now a days tho. Many places have a "Speedball" field, spools in the woods. Some say they have "Concept" fields, tubes in the woods. And let's not forget "Hood in the Woods" at Skirmish!

They're not true woods, and I've played TRUE woods, but it's not concept either. It's all hybrid. Now TRUE WOODS is a blast! Old Run-N-Gun had this deadfall, a MASIVE tree in the center of the field that fell on it's own YEARS before we got there. Better than ANY inflatable snake!!! THAT was fun! The only thing added was boundary tape and a barrel or two to rest the chrony on. :)

My local field has one field with 2 semi circles of tyres all the other fields are completley free of added touches, makes for some very fast fun p-ball (since they upgraded to Inferno's for the site markers that is). I think a return to the woods occasionally can be great fun.

ok...

is it just me, or do most rec players get into the sport with the intent of being like professionals? Not necessarily traveling, spending loads of $$, etc., but at least wanting to play at a high level? For their to be so many rec guys like myself making such negative comments ( and playin rambo - i hate that) is asinine, and i believe THAT is bad for the sport. I realize i'm a bit behind here, but that really bothered me.

As well it should. I know a lot of rec guys who aren't in it for hte "rambo" thing. It's just a stereotype. Kinda like the cheating, whining, high level tournament player that throws Angels. :D

Apparently I wasn't clear (or you didn't read the other posts in this thread). I am a lot of things but an elitist ain't one of them. My point was simply that as things shake out in the wide world of paintball over time what people mean when they say "paintball" in the future will refer to the tourney/sport aspect and not the wood/ camo combat sim sort of game. That is, the non-playing public's frame of reference will be tourney oriented. I wasn't slinging any particular stones at anybody's preference in playing a game that involves paintball equipment--just stating an opinion on how things will eventually turn out, paintball-wise.

Have you ever witnessed Airsoft in action? I thought not. Geek is not a physical type--it's a state of mind.

As for playing ball in unaltered woods I'll just grab me a can of Redman, kiss my sister on the lips and join you. (Oops, was that elitist? Let's ask Buddha)

Moo
I see your point a little better now, but be honest, it was easy to interpret your post as a little elitist.
As a tourney baller I do hope that the way you envisage the future is correct, but for now the best known 'face' of paintball is still the camo clad one. But who knows what the furure brings.
I too think that the two forms of balling can be regarded as two seperate things. But whichever one should be called paintball is a choice I'm not willing to make. Cause let's be honest, rec ball sort of has rights to the name because of the fact it's been around the longest....

Peace (or is that a bit too 'we are the world' like? )

Maybe it'll turn out like the football/ soccer kind of deal. Nah.

PS-- nothing wrong with a little peace (and quiet is good too). I just tend to reject anything that even smacks of PC or PC tendencies. I require re-education, no doubt.
