I think your attitude to maintenance should effect your choice also. The mag is by its nature a little less complex (in its regular form) and easier IMHO to maintain. A cocker if it goes wrong is much more difficult to repair, especially so on the spot or in a game. IMHO!

If you cant be arsed with maintenance I would say mag, but me personally even though I cant be arsed with maintenance Id never part with my cocker, unless it was for a new one.....

While we are on a cosmology kick... the concept of a singularity at the big bang is belived to be incorect. Get this before the big bang (if such a thing has meaning..., probably more correct to say that at t=0 the big bang event) the universe was infinitely big, and started to expand, to a bigger infinity.
This is what I am told by my cosmology lecturer. This solves some nasty cosmological problems such as Inflation (and I just thought that was Gordon Brown's problem...).
Someone mentioned talking about 11 dimensions... the latest I heard was that string theory dealt with 27 dimensions, but only 10 dimensional strings. But mathmaticians can deal with as many dimensions as you like (I think even non discrete values are possible).
Wow that was interesting
I still hate Robbo

Richard, I think your lecturer may well be referring to M Theory where a series of infinitely sized membrane (known as branes) structured universes (ours being a four dimensioned brane) can collide giving rise to what we would term as a birth of a universe, this gets away with the problems when dealing with a singularity as a 'singularity' only occurs when the dividing dimensions disappears momentarily.
All mind blowing stuff granted but fascinating all the same.
I'm off to have some tea and toast :)

But isn't that what education is all about ?
Leastwise, it was when I was at school, I didn't actually learn a damn thing and only got going (academically speaking) long after the school unjustly 'asked' me to sever our school / pupil relationship :)

I did actually teach for about 18 months several years back (not in a school) and I gotta say, I enjoyed it but the difference here was, the kids actually 'wanted' to be there unlike most other forms of GCSE / A Level educational environments.
At least in paintball, people want to learn and 'Hey', I got 16 years of the frikkin game crammed into my brain, so why not try and let you lot have it ?

Firstly there was no paintball at the time of the big bang (t=0 or whatever) so who cares. Furthermore i feel sorry for the guy who wanted some straight answers to whatevers best, the mag or cocker. Reply to Cenobite: A cocker doesnt really have any maintenance issues. Actually, all you have to do is put four drops of oil in the ASA, gas it up and dry fire it. The timing doesnt just all of the sudden get un-timed at an unitmely moment, but if you get some pieces of your chemistry-set stuck somewhere and fcuk it up you'll instantly be surrounded by old-school cocker guys who want to fix it. -And who doesnt like to see the back-block go katching katching katching when you fire it?!

Norwegincocker, I would have thought that even the few posts actually dealing with the initial subject matter of this thread would have made it obvious that there is no real answer to this other than to say the judgement is always going to be in the eye of the beholder.
It's like saying what's the best colour, red or blue ?
As for maintenance issues, every gun ever made has a maintenance issue, it's just a question of degree.
So don't feel sorry for anybody not having any answers because people do have, there is no definitive answer and that is the answer !

Red, red is the best colour

Robbo,

I am afraid that M theory had nothing to do with the whole expanding universe thing, it was simply a misunderstanding that has emerged that there was a singularity at t=0 (or 20odd billion years before paintball) .

It is a very old fashioned cosmological idea that has since been supperseeded with the current theory based on the idea that there wasn't any matter at the start of the universe, just a very high energy density (understood to be started off by "fields" about which noone can really tell anything), this with a nice little loophole about the energy difference between matter and anti-matter allowed more matter than anti-matter to apear, and the energy density of the universe decreased.

BTW one of the big problems associated with all of this the question of what casued the matter to clump together, and that is where string theory comes in.

Robbo-dude:

The first lines of my reply was only an atempt to bring this conversation back to its roots and it was not my intention to tell the guy there is an answer to what is best of mag or cocker. The rest of the words are in reply to cenobite's post about maintenance issues. There is no doubt that every marker has a maintenance issue, because they all need to be maintenanced, but what i'm suggesting is that the cocker maintenance issue isnt really an..'issue', because there wont be a big ..issue unless you do your best to screw the timing. Besides, 6/10 say blue is nicer and statistics rule the world. Congrat's on your 1111th post Robbo. -i think that's funny anyway, but then again im daft..

Hey Richard, I must have missed this post for some reason....anyhow...as for you describing M Theory as a misunderstanding, I 'll draft an email to Stephen. W. Hawking to enlighten him of your findings :)
