More important than the name...

what a crock of ****....

prizes should be all the way down to Novice, however to quantify that statement I am not suggesting equal prizes in any way. What will novices have to compete for, apart from the glory, if there are no prizes. At the end of the day the people that are actually paying to play are the ones that are affected not the pros/some ams who probably pay very little towards playing in the tournament.

This post isnt knocking pro's, they deserve what they get for being the players they are. I just think that people in the Novice bracket who win should at the very least have entry refunded and paint prizes

Novice prizes

If novice is exactly what it's supposed to be - i.e. very inexperienced players and teams - then they should play for trophies but no more. Can't think of any other sport where people get so many prizes as Paintball as it is... giving people 'real' prizes at the start of their career is insane - it sets expectations that are unrealistically high regarding what they should receive as they progress.

Besides, who plays for prizes? It's about beating the other teams and being no.1 isn't it?

No...

I already have that degree. :)

I've always wonderred if it made sense ot charge LESS for higher divisions - make people pay for the privilege of not having to get stomped by better teams, and provide an even bigger incentive to move up. Problem with that is you're throwing up a bigger obstacle to getting in new customers.

But yeah, I'm with Manike - giving away prizes for playing weaker teams is stupid. You're not supposed to award sucking. If you're offended by the suggestion that you suck, stop hiding in the Novice division.

Novice division should be no more than the title.

Me agree three!

If anyone complains about only winning trophies and kudo's in the novice division they should STFU and play at a higher level :D my humble opinion.

Am's for winning should get sponsorship into future events and flights hotels etc paid for to help them play more and get to Pro level.

Pro's should win MONEY!

Yeah baby :) In my dreams huh?

raehl, first off I don't ever recall implying in any way that the prizes should be handed out equally. I'm not in favor of a communist paintball series. The point I was trying to make is that promoters want teams to show up to their events. The more teams for them the better off they are, I think we can agree on that. However if said promoter stopped handing out prizes for the lowest level, soon it would be to their detrement because they would begin to lose paying customers.

Again, this all boils down to trying to prevent teams from sandbagging. If there were rules like someone had posted above taking the top teams from each division and forcing them to move up, it would make things more equal across the board, or atleast help to make things more equal.

like I said before, there is no full-proof way to prevent sandbagging. But eliminating all prizes at the lowest level would only hurt paintball's growth by not giving any teams at the lowest spectrum any incentive other then the chance to parade around as the am. z champs, lucky them.

Oh, and why did you say that I made no sense, is it because it made no sense to you? And I guess that's also why I was wrong not once, but twice right, because I didn't agree with what you had to say? Chris, before you start trying to make decisions with the player in mind, try becoming a player. Instead of playing "college" paintball or organizing it or whatever it is you may do, sac up and play in a "real" series and then talk to me about tournament paintball and what's best for the players.

Do you really think teams would not show up to play rookie if there were no prizes offered for the classification?

I understand that the rookie class is supposed be for teams to sample the system, the rules, the reffing, etc.

The only way a team would make a decision to not play if there were no prizes, is if they were reasonably sure they would be winning those prizes. That idea in and of itself, tells me the team is probably well aware of the fact that they are trying to play in a classification in which they don't belong. So should leagues and series cater the the whims of teams who are obviously trying to corrupt the classification system for their own benefit?

Another point to add - teams will indeed show up to play for no prizes. The Millennium may have changed their prize structure recently, but I know the Novice teams were playing for only a trophy. The teams came. the teams that felt their interests would be better served competeing for material goods stepped up and played amateur. It worked fine.

You signature says that those who think winning isn't everything have never won. It seems from what you've written that you don't actually think winning is everything, have you never won.

And for your info, I assure you that I have sacked up and played in real series. All of them. And I have won all of them. And I will guarantee you that WINNING was unquestionably more important than what I got in prizes.

Among other things, Tee

You didn't play the lower ranks when they were populated with 100+ teams. Check your paystub--the small print says paid for by Novice teams.

The simple point you all keep missing or ignoring is that in the current system ALL the teams aren't athletes and sportsmen first--they are customers (whatever their pretensions otherwise). The ONLY reason the PSP events have grown hugely over the last three years is because they had no place else to go even as pball in general exploded. And frankly it's that defensive attitude and demand that everyone else play for the love of the game alone (while we take your money) that will sink the PSP if they don't get their act together.

The Millenium on the other hand can point to lower entries, superior venues and a consistent, across the board effort to improve all aspects of their events for the benefit of all the players. Niall comes on here and explains what's going on, answers questions and lays out what's what as best he is able. That goes a ways to satisfying the players that at least somebody actual gives a rat's rear end.

And as soon as ALL the big series start taking control of the movement of players and teams and prove they are serious about sandbagging then maybe the players and teams will too. Until then why would a Nov/Am? team move up when all they are playing for is bragging rights. Is it better to be Nov champ than Am nobody?
