Many sports, including rugby, American football, the javelin throw, and pole vaulting have their roots in war skills, and that is part of why they are fun. It is satisfying to think that you as an individual are a more Darwinisticly Fit Specimen because of something you do when you are basically screwing around. Also, struggling to prevail is an affirmative answer to internal imperatives. Doing so at the simulated expense of a member of your own species makes us happy monkeys.
