300 fps or 280fps

The thing that worries me is when you're at a tourney, you've just watched both teams crono, both teams back players are pushing 300. You go and stand at the 50 to watch the game, and the guy from the team on the left in the center stand up is shooting at almost no elevation all the way accross the field while the other teams 3 back guys paint is falling 4 to 5 yards short when these guys have their guns tilted up pretty extremely up, about 40* (I didn't have a protractor or anything) I don't understand how that works ... what with phisics and all ...

I hope this makes sense, if not, I'm happy to clarify stuff ...

Broken bones from a paint ball hit, Is this the geriatric forum (no offence Robbo). The 300 fps limmit came from the gogle manufacturers. 300 fps is the maximum safe speed for direct hits to an approved lexan lense.

No. If you crank up a gun to around 400 or more FPS you WILL break fingerbones. Been there, seen that, old stuff. The IPPA was the orginization that decided on the 300 FPS with the help of gun and other industry people.

You obviously don't remember the days before JT made a paintball goggle. The old UVEX goggles were "da bomb" in the 80's. The goggle manufacturers made safer goggles, but they weren't tested to a specific limit. The IPPA did the safety testing, and found that 300 FPS was the safest speed you cold use. And the goggles were then made to exceed it.

Do I have to go into the stash and get the ads to show JT's X-fire goggles taking its at 325 - 400 FPT to prove myself?

No dude, the 300fps limit had nothing to do with goggles. That limit came because it was determined that about 12 pounds of energy was required to break a finger in terms of the impact of a paintball. When the weight of a paintball was brought into the equation, the safe limit came out to about 300 feet per second, and that is why we have the limit. Goggle manufacturers actually make their goggles to such a level that they can withstand an impact in excess of 400fps, your fingers unfortunately, cannot

Does anyone actually know where this 280 thing came from and the reasons behind it?

I am sure the UKPSF had good intentions but doesn't look like ANY players support them and there are very valid arguements against it.

One other thing, If this rule is designed to prevent bad publicity of the sport and show us as responsible for lowering the speed. Surely all it does it give tacit acknowledgement that paintball is a dangerous sport and that we had been running "hot" for the last 15 years ????

Seems like one big shot in the foot to me..............

And yes I do remember playing with Uvex googles with and with out the woodstock. Thats what the field rented out for us to use and yes there were still guys running around in shop glasses.

The story I heard was that 300 fps was set as a mark for the gog manufactrers. And 68 cal paintballs were not the only size paint used. Tipmans SMG-60 used 62 cal paint balls that were capable of breaking lenses at a lower speed then 68 cal paint. And there was also a Football (American not Euro) shaped ball that had the same problem. So yes a lense can take a hit from +300 fps (would you want to were gogs that could, just, take a 300 shot?) from a 68 cal pantball.

Now I'm not saying that broken fingers had nothing to do with the 300 limmit, its just not the story I heard..

Don't forget the old 0.56 cal ball as well,

Tragedies occur in many sports but usually what comes out is a report on what happened and a recomendation on how to avoid the same happening again (the number of examples is beyond belief ) and if any report was published on the incident it should have been recorded on this forum.

I also have to state that I have been shot on the back of the head a few times and it hasn't affected me adversely I am not in favour of knee jerk reactions as the only effect is to confuse people

you used uvex? you posh bugger we never got uvex round our way, way to expensive
