i think the percentage is well into its 90's, but a simple fact most new drivers have a accident in there 1st years driving. so get a shed £500 max run the ass off it reverse into lamposts hit the garden wall and bump a car trying to park in a carpark. then eventually go up someone rear cause you were too busy banging the tunes on, and when you hit your 2nd year you can get a better car knowing you have already done all the stupid sh*t
lol are 206s steap on insurance any one know

right im basically after my own first car and dont no what to get and people keep suggesting loads of different cars so just wondering if people who drive them could tell me what there like looking as small hatches with cheapish insurance but still not slow

cheers
The section in bold, should be considered as...doesn't exist.

I will assume, that first car means you are 17-19 I suppose.

What you should do, is completely forget about the car, until you have worked out what you can afford for insurance.

Work out how much cash you have to spend a month.

OK, so say £40 a month on fuel for a small engined car.
Allow about £15 a month for road tax.
You will need to allow around £100 a month for insurance, I would say at a bare minimum.

Pick a few cars and phone around for quotes...best car for insurance, is a Beige Citroen 2CV...just to give you an example.

It is a sad fact, that loads of cars that you would love (2.2 Vectra's, etc) will be dirt cheap to buy...but cost you thousands to insure.

Just a tip for you...a modified car, can save you money.

My 3rd car, when I was 19, was a 2 16V Calibra, less than 3 years old.

Link, an Insurance company, wanted £2500 a year Fully comp for me on that car.

My then Insurance Broker, Adrian Flux, who specialise in modified and performance cars, insured me including lowered suspension, performance exhaust system, air filter alloys, stereo etc...for £1400...ironicly, with Link!

The very best way, to get cheap insurance, on a cool car...is to build or buy a Kit car...such as the Lotus 7 type ones, which you can build yourself, for not alot...also means you can upgrade the engine when you like...but the main thing, is specialist insurance...because you built it, or they assume you did, they also assume you will repair it and are more likely to take care of it, so insurance is utterly cheap.

My mate and I built a stunning Lotus 7 type car, as his first car with a 1.3 lump...blistering acceleration and handling, because it's so small and light...Insurance, fully comp £285...that was 12 or so years ago...but you get the idea.

So yeah...work out what you can afford to spend on insurance, then pick the car with what's left over!:D

Diesel is good...in fact, if you want to go silly...get a 1.9 TD Golf...maybe mark 3...bomb proof...then get your modified insurance company, and bung a 60 BHP or more Nitrous injection kit on it...and pi$$ all over many cars from the lights!

I remember a guy at work buying a 50 quid 1.1 fiesta for his step son, only to get a best quote of 1,100 quid to insure it. A lot of young guys I know have their parents guarantee a finance agreement on a new car with free insurance as that works out cheaper.
I lol'd, why would i want to pay £10K for a £5k car :eek::p

As the skeet said, look at diesels too (i would say VW diesels only really)

Dunno what sort of deal finance houses run round your parts but one of the lads I worked with had a Saxo with 2yrs free fully comp insurance and 3 yrs 0% credit, after 2 yrs he chopped it in for an Astra with another 2yrs free insurance and 0% finance, at 4yrs he had the no claims to afford the 5th years insurance and the depreciation on 2 cars over 5 years worked out cheaper than the insurance would have for the first 4 years. Now, obviously he was far to sensible by half for your comprehension as by 22 he had a paid for reasonable car while his mates were struggling to run sh!t boxes.

*EDIT* Sorry James, a hint of sarcasm took hold of me last night ;)

As much financial sense as it make's. Your still paying for a car for five years untill you actually own the damm thing and to me, that make's no sense.:)

there are websites that let you check what insurance groups each car is, and weather the insurance will be higher or lower due to repair cost's.

Pick a car you like, keep it under 1.4L. take the hit on insurance in the first year. Drive safe, and don't be a muppet an drive like a chav, and by the second year you'll have one year no claims, and far cheaper insurance. :)

fiesta 1.25 zetec - Nippy little cars that can go pretty fast as they have 16valves.
cheapish to insure - about £1100 and cheap to pick up -about £1500.

This was my first car, only kept it for a year as it hit around about:)
