I honestly do not believe appealing to peoples ultruistic values is ever going to make reffing any better in this country, although I applaud you for trying.

You don't have to be a Panitball expert to work out the best way to improve the caliber of refferees and get people to do it is pay a decent wage.

If you paid ref's say a hundred quid a day, I'd imagine you'll have a lot of people actually willing to do it. So much so, you'd be over subscribed. In that way, the tournament promoter can then pick only the very best ref's ergo eliminating many of the above problems.

So to the question, Reffing: What are you going to do about it?

Answer, pay increased tournament entry fee's.

The current pricing structure for tournament paintball in this country is actually killing the growth and development of the sport. Whether it's people selling bullets at trade to novice teams, or stupid low entrance fee's. Until people are willing to put up (the required greenbacks), perhaps they should just shut up (whinging about the quality of the ref's).

As to the issue of naughty players, well get out the ban stick. Hopefully the Fed can go the distance, and if it does indeed resurrect UK Tournament ball hopefully a discipline commitee will be part of that. At the very least a robust penalty and fine arrangement could be put in place (i.e. no more sanctioned events until fines are paid up).

Throwing money at a problem like this is not the solution.

A couple of years ago, I negotiated a deal with a well-known event organiser to pay a select group of refs a sum close to amount you have suggested to ref for them.

What happened then? Refs started dropping out. And these are not just people who ref from time to time - they were supposed to be the best.

If you just pay refs silly sums of money without having anything else in place, you're not solving the problem.

Reffing, like playing, takes commitment. But it also takes much more, like common sense , a thick skin, quick reflexes and the ability to see the holes in the arguments put by players.

What I propose is to solve the problem from the bottom up, starting out by training the refs to a recognised standard, with ongoing assessment and monitoring, and having a database of refs that an organiser can tap into.

With any new idea, it's easy to jump on the "that won't work" bandwagon.

So, instead of trying to find fault, why don't you commit to the course?

That is the only way you will change anything - by doing something about it.

For the sake of clarity, every major UK circuit uses Mill rules now.

As far as I'm concerned, that's unity and one rulebook.

Next question?

cant blame anything on refs cos the rule is that the refs decision is final I hate seeing players whine they look like bloody toddlers its stupid.

we must teach players etiquette are there any fixed rules about how player ought to behave?

Especially these pampered professional payers thinking they an get whatever they want they just kick off after someone's taken off wrongly what's the point the ref cant just spawn the guy back in pros must learn to be a patient just as everyone else is, someone said earlier that they rely on reffing for security of there sponsers , well what Im gonna say to that i that every one else does without sponers s they should man the hell up and pay for their own gear.

IMO refs shoube equiped with a bludgeon to whack layers over the bonce when they are acting like 4 years olds.
May I suggest a Taser?

Much more compact and effective.

:)

I would love to come along to a marshal training day if you ran it. Even if I don't do any marshalling coming along to learn it would be a good day.

I'm pretty sure the subject of reffing and disciplinary actions will be coming up at the Fed's next meeting; if nobody proposes them, then I will.
Bully is the man who will no doubt be a touchstone for us all on the board and I'm damned sure we will come out of the meeting with a better understanding of what needs to be done to get better reffing.

The subject of disciplinary actions should be a relatively easy one and I'll propose, anybody threatening physical violence upon a ref will be banned for life .... have that!

If you verbally abuse a ref in terms of swearing at him, I will propose an instant expulsion from the event .. have that!

If and when it should ever happen [hopefully not], as long as we uphold the rules and proposed actions, the deterrence value from then on, should be of some worth.

Thank you, Pete.

I will await hearing from you before I post further on the subject.
