One thing that I despise deeply is the tv licence. It's a ridiculous amount of money and it's only purpose is to keep the BBC afloat.

I don't own a landline yet, but 6quid a year to make a national standard seems like a fair exchange considering the amount of people on here who can't access more than a mb (which I'm guessing is the case I also have at home, since my internet seems to be really crappy recently)

here's a little widely unkown fact for you, did you realise that non payment of the T V licence was the no 1 reason for women being jailed for any offence in the uk! a few years ago. not sure if it is still the no 1 reason now but it is an astounding statistic, place your bets for the first court summons for non payment of internet tax:D
I doubt it as more than 2/3rds of all crime are motor related crimes.

What is it about the BBC that you dont like? Is it the quality tv programmes and shows? Is it the 10+radio stations catering for all tastes? Is it the sport? The dedicated kids channels?

And all with no adverts.

Yea man, come to think of it, the BBC sucks!

No, it's simply the fact that they're media that are directly enforced by law. There's no choice, you HAVE to fund them, not to mention the fact it's nearly £150 a year per address.

And I don't doubt that they provide a quality service, though I happen to watch very little BBC nor do I listen to any of their ten+ radio stations. I do, however, have to fund the BBC if I want to watch any other television network (which is an almost ridiculous prospect when you consider how many channels you receive when you're on digital, or any other package television).

I don't dislike the BBC, I'm just miffed about how they get their revenue.

and how very British, that those that have always hate to give to those that dont
I wouldnt mind if it were for a WORTHWHILE forward thinking investment.

But to quote

this unpopular tax will barely make a dent in the likely total cost

So this tax is basically going to go to waste, as it will be upgrading the networks to inferior standards that are available today and will barely make any difference anyway.

and ironically the reason we are so far behind japan is because we dropped a lotta bombs on them so they rebuilt it on more modern technologies

Yeah, I suppose nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki was worth the 50mb broadband they got! And hey, don't forget the pack of lamb chops that can cook themselves on the way back from the supermarket.

Isn't the mere suggestion perhaps a little crass?

I would imagine the development of modern Japanese infrastructure has more to do with the national culture and concept of keiretsu (plus working with trade unions). Conversly, one could argue that the growth of trade unionism in post war Britain has screwed the UK manufacturing industry and infrastructure.

**Although i do kinda agree that the tax system here sucks, balls.

Crass.. maybe... but that aint gonna change anytime soon.

The sad thing is, virgin's network infrastructure is amazingly well conceptualised, if the goverment paid virgin to roll it out, it would be much MUCH better than what we will get.
