think its better to be over aggressive at first and learn your limits and be able to tame it down, rather than being to cautious and getting no where.
So in short, if you see a move or a mug go for it, after you have been drilled a couple of times you will learn when its on.
As someone mentioned earlier, the further you get up the field the more attention you will get from the other team, if you have 3-4 guns on you just stay there and soak it up, it frees up a lot of field for your team to move up through.
Also when you are in your barricade (or in fact anywhere) you should always try and keep your gun up.
