The problem in holding an event of this size is the sheer number of considerations these guys have to contend with.
Judging, atmosphere, logistics, access, security, site design, field layouts, real time management ....the list goes on...and on.

Huge strides have been made of late with a designated crew almost eliminating the anomalous standard of logistical organisation we sometimes used to see at these Millennium events.
This was primarily achieved by adopting a single crew to set up all the events in the series and I think this has been a complete success.

The choice for venue isn't a good one especially when one thinks of what we really need, and that is car parking, and then a flat area of grass for playing and a flat area for vendors.
All adjacent to each other.
This is hardly asking for the 'Hanging Gardens of Babylon' because ostensibly all we need is open spaces.

On the surface, Crystal Palace does seem like a bit of a capture but the practicalities such as security suggest otherwise.
The tournament will always rattle around inside that stadium and therefore makes it almost impossible to create an atmosphere and ballers are now becoming more demanding in less practical aspects of our event promotions and wanting an 'atmosphere'.
Hardly surprising as Laurent has whetted people's appetites with his tournaments and the guys over here get to hear about what the NPPL put on offer.

I do think finances was a consideration when selecting Crystal Palace this year and I think the Millennium guys did the best of a bad job in putting it on there because even though the wind tried to spoil things, the Millennium crew had now morphed into some sort of SAS disaster attack squad and after honing their expertise in Paris when all hell broke loose one night, the problems in Crystal Palace were put to bed with no more than a flutter.

With so many of a tournament's requirements now being met such as logistics, judging, schedule etc, then perhaps 2007 is the year it all gets nailed and we can enjoy tourneys that parallel the NPPLs in the States because out of all the things a promoter now has to provide, the 'atmosphere' side of things is relatively easy to accomplish because it is an emergent property of site design and things like music. side shows etc.

All in all the Campaign Cup was a success on many levels but it also highlighted what the modern day ballers require for their entry fee and I'm pretty sure from what I have heard of the plans for 2007, these should be in place next year.

WTF?! You dont know how god dam hard us squeegeers worked on the feilds. We had no lunch break..only every now and then were we allowed to have a toilet breaks! Most days we worked over time..and some squeegeers worked till 12 at night just so the feild is all cleaned and blowned for the morning, Scaffholding had collapse making us retreat our games to one feild (chronic) making everything 10 times longer than usual..

then a pole fell down holding all the netting that we had to get back up and running so the next game can be played asap so players dont get restless. The french guys did extremely well keeping the event up and running, espcially "ANDY" who was non stop running to each tent making sure we are well equipped and energise for the day, he put others first before himself and only had a hot chocolate the whole f*cking day, making himself ill..but he still carried on!

Squeegeeing is an extremely tough job so dont you dare give us the stick about not blowing up bunkers.!

i wasnt saying it was you lot and i would imagine it is a hard job but i would have thought the refs would sort it out and they just stood there

I agree a lot with A.B - This years Mill seemed to have more atmosphere that at NEC, especially walking into the trade village which has a buzz which was lacking last year.

I personally liked the venue when i got down the stairs and from a playing point of view i didnt really mind the place. I think when things went tits up, the MS crew really got on with things with little fuss, and things were pretty neat till the wind picked up on Saturday, although i didnt envy the guy who drew the short straw and had to go on the stadium roof whilst windy to sort the netting!

From a spectating point of view, yes it was pants (apart from watching CPL) We had 5 teams there and the idea was to kick back when we finished and watch our colleagues - unfortunately that didnt happen so we ended up hanging around the side of the pitches all weekend - but thats only a small gripe.

I thought the NEC event last year just lacked something, not sure exactly what, probably atmosphere which i thought there was quite a lot of this year, especially in the players area.

Security was crap - i helped the Polish dudes who had there van broken into (of which people gave chase as mentioned earlier) but to be fair, the only cars that were broken into were ones that had something on display - I saw one same car on all 3 days which had parked near the broken into cars and they still had a TomTom on the dashboard! Im not saying that everyone leaves stuff visible, but I always clear everything into the boot, especially when entering unknown ****holes - (Bizarely enough on the way out of CP (about 1/2 mile away) i took a wrong turn straight into a Police Anti-Terrorist swoop with approx 30+ Armed police there!! (On the news that night!)

We got a cheap hotel about 3 miles away (10-15 mins in car max) which was pretty decent - alll in all i thought it was a good event and with everything, im sure they will polish up on the flaws of this year ready fro 2007.

Roll on next year, wherever its held!!

also, the 2 5 man fields where originally a 7 man field and on friday night converted into 5 man fields
That always happens.

If you look at the layout of the 2 fields, the 5-man field is the same as the 7-man, with one of the tapes missing.
