Bench!

Better Than Tom36
ive just found out that a guy i knew a few years ago, of roughly the same build, can bench 100k.... and im not happy (especially as he was a cocky little sh!t). so basically i need to boost my bench in the next few months (by 35k) so i dont feel physically inadequate

i spoke to someone a while ago on here, and they said that they could help, think his name was john(something) and remember bieng surprised with his results. anyone got any suggestions on training stuff? good protien shakes (no creatine etc please, as ive heard a few horror stories about that), diets? whatever, i dont really care about bulking up, just the strength aspect... can anyone help me? please:)

dont do any cardio workouts like rowing and running, just weights, don't expect to match his performance, but then again you could beat it, not all bodies are the same and have the same capabilities, i suggest exercises like bench press, incline bench press, squats, butterflies, hyperextensions, stuff like that, some are for the back, but without the core muscle groups its gonna be so much harder, hence work on them aswell, not just arms, alot of protein from things like eggs(the whites of the egg) chicken, steak etc, creatine isn't bad stuff as its found in steak, so do you eat steak haha, i use mammoth 2500, 2500 calories a glass, tastes well erm not bad but does the trick, as far as reps go, to start with the mass build up id recommend 3 sets of 15, at a set weight, and by the end of each set you should be struggling sorta if that makes sense.

hope this helps slightly:D

I would suggest going to your local gym and speaking to one of the instructors there who will give you professional advice. Doing what people say on the internet is a dangerous thing and this is your body were talking about.

For example, ceasing to do cardio etc and only do weights seems like a silly idea to me. But im not a qualified instructor, and at a guess neither is infernomark. This is no diss on him, just a concerned 'for your welfare' post.

then again, you dont actually need any qualifications to be an instructor at a gym either....

Decent quality members gyms as well as council run gyms/sport centres do ask for qualifications from accredited organisations. I know this to be fact as a friend is an instructor in a local gym and this is what he's told me.

Places like, living well or david lloyd or your council run gym as i said will have accredited instructors. Of course, you could ignore my advice and just go out and do whatever to your body. It is your's after all.

yer, to be fair, a gym would be the best place to go, but im poor, so will have to settle for school, my bench and ben's:(
council gyms usually cost around 3 pound summat for as long as you want. And an intro sesh is about a tenner usually from memory.

Im kind of lording it up paying £30 for a year at a fully equipped modern gym at uni. Its ace. And that gives me access to a pool, running track, astro pitches, grass pitches, baminton courts etc etc. Makes you sick doesn't it? :)

EH can bench 100k...
That's not much of a statement, is it? Can he bench it once? 10 times?

For the position I play in American football, there is a minimum requirement of being able to bench 100k in series of 20. And that's the minimum.
So how many times can he bench 100k? Worthwhile finding out before you get all worked up.

Tom, there will always be people who can do things better than you and in life you have to come to accept it otherwise you are gonna be one unhappy man.
If you are still hell-bent on gaining parity with your mate and you think you will be a better person for gaining said parity then I'm afraid it's down to hard work and diet.
There is a lot of misinformation and scaremongering about creatine but if you do the necessary research on the net I think you will come to a more rational appreciation of the risk benefit ratio.
If you then decide creatine is ok, then I would combine this with a high protein diet with a thrice weekly visit to a gym where you do the exercises to build the chest muscles necessary to bench what you want.
No-inferno's advice seems pretty sound with regard to the type of regime you need to follow.

You must do flat bench, incline bench and fly pressing but if you do this it would be pretty silly to concentrate on this aspect of strength whilst ignoring the other muscle groups.
My advice would be, forget your mate, be happy with yourself but if you feel the need to be influenced by him then go for a more general approach to increasing your body strength instead of just your chest muscles.
