At what point would you say serious paintball training actually begins ? How can the paintballer judge if he is on the "other side of the divider" ?.

Jim
Good question, Jim. I'm not sure I've got a good answer. But it starts with being honest with yourself in assessing where you're at. It starts with a measure of humility that is both willing to learn, to acknowledge you don't know everything already and even accept criticism as a positive. It starts with being hungry. How much do you really want to succeed? What are you prepared to do, to give up? It also starts with being uncompromising in the sense good enough is never good enough.
In the real world everybody has a different amount of time and resources they can commit to the effort. That doesn't necessarily mean the player with less of both isn't serious--it simply means it requires more patience and likely coming to terms with lower expectations. However, under any circumstances the goal ought to be becoming the best player you can be.

I play ant train to win, but any other time i play i play for have fun.

At events and training you are trying to win and get better, at the usual scrimmages with other teams etc you play to get better, but also to have some jokes an banter.

If we didnt have fun when playing even i playing to win none of us would play. Winning is fun, playing is fun, its all good fun, if it wasnt the sport wouldnt take off lol!

Me and Lump play most of the tourneys going which takes up almost every weekend! But if there is a weekend with no tourney on we'll try and find somewhere to train... does that count as serious or fun? :)

I think that probably counts as fun. If you were serious you would be training on the majority of weekends, aimed towards doing as well as possible in the few big tournaments you do play.
Loking at it from a slightly different angle: if you had the choice of playing every weekend, or training 5 weekends in 6 then doing really well at top events (e.g. Millennium) on the 5th weekend, which would you prefer? The first option is for fun, the second more serious.

When you were a kid didnt you "play" for fun? (dont take that the wrong way ;))

I certainly play for fun, but during tourny's i certainly wouldnt mind winning. At the same time im having a fantastic time. I cant understand people playing paintball purely to win, and not having fun.

I agree paintballing is expensive, but i dont agree with it being called a "rich-boys-hobby". Im certainly not rich but manage to find the cash to put towards paintball. Just shop around :D
