It will depend on the ip holder and how much they care or if they know about the games or not
Exactly, Dex.

It depends on whether they know about it and whether they can be bothered to pursue it.

A few years back, a well-known UK law firm sent out thousands of letters making payment demands in respect of "theft of intellectual property" - in plain English, illegal downloading.

Many people paid up.

To keep perspective, Urban Paintball are advertising 2016 games called Tropic Thunder, Hurt Locker, Full Metal Jacket etc.......

To be fair, at what point does the royalty/copyright end? For games like hurt locker, AVM, stargate, SAO, sands of time, etc do these also require royalties for links to films, series etc, implied or actual?

It will depend on the ip holder and how much they care or if they know about the games or not

Copyright automatically exists
Royalties apply if the copyright holder wants the royalties, a copyright holder may have no interest in the royalties
Eg if you buy a t-shirt with branding there will probably be royalties involved - the seller is making the sale on the branding rather than just that it is a t-shirt
A dodgy market trader may not be paying the royalty

However a royalty may have been paid along the way
I know someone who sells custom cushions (they actually annoy her as her core business is jewelry, and steam punk - the cushions are a spin off, but are good sellers!). She can't go to every brand, film studio etc and will make them from any legitimate material she can source (where the rights are dealt with) there are materials she could get and sell but are not legitimate. She doesn't fancy being busted for copyright

Using the name of a film might not be locked to copyright, there's a grey area between the words of the name and theme as to how much of that is legally enforceable

There may be an element of 'homage', and as long as there isn't a fraudulent attempt to show legitimacy with a connection then there wouldn't be an enforceable legal issue
Some will heavily guard their branding (eg Disney) and you can do nothing with any of their brands. However I have played Disney vs looney tunes, that just had the theme of what types of character were on each side

By definition, in scenario a film name would imply the game theme is also in line so you are heading closer to the potential of copyright, however games often head off in tangents

In tfd as event organisers we are known for our takur ghar series (not realy a copyright breach as it relates to a real life event, and in the origins of one of our founders there is a reason for the team name and then being our original event) over time the relation to the tg real life story and the scenario deviated heavily - I'm not aware of many real life Colombian gangsters running the drugs trade in Afghanistan

with stargate at least, I believe that all games have adjusted the name to staargate
So there is a tenuous adjustment

War fighters have a rainbow 6 theme - but i believe that is fully approved and they are associated with the game in promotions etc

In many cases a copyright holder has no interest in pursuing their fans, they may have an issue with someone profiting from a name & the fans.

In tfd as well as the tg theme we have run games with film and book themes, but avoid overdoing the copyright issue
All our storylines and games are written by us - they are be inspired and themed around something of interest
(We have also never profited from an event! We always work with a site, for many of our games we saw no money at all, for others we have walked away with money, however have spent much more on gadgets and gizmos to ensure the props we provide actually do something)

With uwl shoreline have at least up to 2015 had the rights to use the uwl name & logo
To date it's arguable as to how legitimate uwl 2016 publicity is - it's not formally announced as not being with shoreline
There is nothing to stop anyone from running a woodland tournament league, it's up to the owner of uwl as to the implication of the use of that name

WarFighters has never used any other companies IP without permission. Due to an issue with licensing we can no longer use the Clancy brand as Ubisofts legal ownership stipulated that it could only be used for console gaming, and could not continue to extend that licence to us. We had a eight year long co-branding history running Ghost Recon to Splinter Cell and hosted most of the official previews. That relationship was unique and will never be repeated.

[WarFighters crew wearing Rainbow Six insignia at the official preview. Big Phil Campion former 22 SAS]

These last few months we have worked very closely in assisting Ubisoft with the launch of Rainbow Six - Siege. This included sourcing the crew, equipment and providing the venues for their promotions, the Chris Ryan video and a forthcoming episode of the Gadget Show, we also were drafted in to support the official european press preview. The relationship between our companies has also been re-enforced with the fact that one of the game characters is named after me, THATCHER. I also appear in the Ryan video as "Thatch" at the Rainbow Six Specialist Training Facility for Rainbow Six. So what we did was indirectly endorse WarFighters. Next year we have a new game format called Siege, it's inspired 100% on the console game. Nextgen attempted to hijack Siege and even used Ubisofts artwork to promote the game on their FB page, I requested that they removed it, and the very kindly did. Otherwise Ubisoft would have taken action to protect their IP.

[Video with Ryan - Please note this is a video promotional stunt and not an actual SAS selection]

I doubt they could prevent the word Siege from being used. Its been one of my pet-hates with paintball promoters using IP's that belong to someone else, and most are guilty of just lifting images and so on. It's completely unprofessional. Demon were bitching over a logo related image a few weeks back yet have ripped off video games images and even a Pink Floyd track to promote a game. So you can hardly throw bricks at scumbag Barnett for stealing IP when it seems to be the accepted norm here.

Attached is a photo that we are using to promote Siege, the photo is 100% WarFighters, in-house using photoshop. It's not that hard to produce original images. Notice that I'm holding a Magfed TCR in the images, they are not lifted from any video game.

Here's a concept one. We still have access to the 747, so maybe a game will be offered to our customer base. IP infringement using the name Thatcher, er no, that's me in the flesh. Using 6, naw. It's Rainbow Six. So there are ways to dance around these things.

Tom hit the nail on the head. Pay homage, don't lower yourself to Barnetts level. Maybe its a good time to change?

NOW STANDBY FOR THE BULL****

I received this on a review site. Complete jealously with this moronic fake review. There's no prizes for guessing who wrote it either.

Rude, childish, unprofessional and actually very nasty.

Went to Warfighters a couple of months ago as part of a stag do. The owner who was doing the briefing kept on making out he was in the SAS. Kept saying things like "I can't tell you my name for security reasons, but you can call me Dave" even though behind him on the wall as he said it was a certificate with his photo on it and the name Dave Thatcher lol. One of the guys in our group was in the Army and started to call him out on it, asking him questions about the SAS which he couldn't answer or was blatantly making up until in the end he admitted it was part of an act he puts on for customers to 'enhance their experience'. We all decided we wanted to leave before even playing after seeing this SAS charade but the owner refused to give us a refund so we had to get our money refunded via our credit card issuer. Days later, the owner friended the organiser of our group on Facebook and started posting really childish and abusive stuff on his Facebook because we left unhappy that he was pretending to be an ex-serving soldier when he wasn't. He posted some pretty nasty personal stuff about our organisers appearance, his weight, calling him childish names. It was like a 12 year old. All because we wanted to leave because he got rumbled pretending to be a ex-soldier and we found it distasteful. But it got worse than that. Via Facebook, this 'dave' found out where our organiser worked and he started posting nasty stuff about him on his employers social media sites, it was unbelievable that the owner of a company would treat a customer in this way. So our organiser had to speak to Facebook and get him blocked. Within days, the organiser started getting lots of friend requests on Facebook from people he didn't immediately know so he accepted them and guess what? they turned out to be fake profiles from this 'dave' character who would all post nasty messages on his facebook AND his employers facebook page. Facebook had to block eight different accounts in the end, all of which were the owner of Warfighters 'Dave' who appears to have some sort of illness. Its not normal for the owner a business to behave like this, stalking and abusing an unhappy customer with lots of fake facebook accounts, tracing where that customers works and trying to disrupt their job. None of us in the group have ever seen anything quite like it. So all I can say is that I have no idea how good the games are at warfighters as we never got to play any. We wanted to leave before the briefing was over because the owner was pretending to be something he wasn't and went crazy when he was unmasked. Maybe the games there are amazing, maybe they are not. But the behaviour of the owner towards a group of unhappy customers is utterly disgusting, childish, unprofessional and downright bullying. I had no idea businesses could behave in this way in this day and age."

You see the scumbag isn't happy with just stealing other peoples money.

Message to scumbag: I've never been, or have ever claimed to have been in the SAS, that's the video game character luv. Maybe you should limit the gin intake, its fogging up your reality metre.

UWL Official Announcement from Tommy Cole [Owner of the UWL, Worldwide]

Firstly, I’d like to apologise to everyone for the delay in making an official announcement concerning the UWL, I would also like to thank all the players for supporting my UWL series last year and for being extremely patient in waiting to see what happens for next year’s UWL events.

I would also like to thank Pete for stepping in and helping out but as he has explained, I have been extremely busy working for the NXL travelling across the States from west to east and back again.
Part of my new job is to arrange all five venues and to also integrate the rules with the Millennium and it's been a pretty tough schedule these past few months.

Once again, I apologise for my delay, I certainly didn't mean to disrespect our UWL players in any way and I hope you can all participate next year in an even better series of events than last year.
The changes I will be making are focussed upon giving the UWL players a better experience and better promotions.

Unfortunately, circumstances have transpired where I felt there was a need to distance ourselves from the previous promoter and to seek out alternate options for 2016 for the benefit of all concerned.
Part of the delay in me getting back to you was because I wanted to make sure I get the right people in place to move the league forward in 2016.
I have had several talks with people in the UK and I'm confident we will have an improved arrangement for everybody next year.
I still have to finalise the details for next year and as soon as that is completed, I will announce the changes but it's important to know, there is only one UWL series and it is the one I will be endorsing and nobody else's.
The previous promoter will not be promoting my UWL league next year and I will be announcing the replacements soon enough.
I just wanted you to know we will definitely be up and running for 2016 in the UK.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the players who have supported us in 2015 and I look forward to having the UWL represented in the UK.
Many thanks for your support and your patience.
