Students Rioting today

I think what a lot of people are forgetting, is that alot of students (myself included) voted lib dem because it was the most appealing to younger generations with student fees being cut one of the main points that was broadcasted to students. With the vote on student fee's being passed and lib dem apearing to go back on their words I think they have a right to be angry. Now students are looking at coming out of uni with a minimum of £27k debt, before living expenses are even taken into consideration. I dont condone violence, vandalism or general yobishness (it is a word, oxford dict just havent put it in yet.) and I imagine it started out as ''A peacefull protest" but the fact of the matter is a lot of us are unhappy with the way the fees have been handled, and a lot will be unhappy with the way that some have reacted.

I have never been under the illusion that uni is a given right, I expect to pay for it, I don't however expect to be lied to and have the extra money that I will spend on my tuition fee being used to pay back the national deficit.

You may have voted Lib Dem, but the current Government isnt Liberal Democrat unfortunately.

As for being lied to...hmm...dont wanna sound condescending but honestly do you expect better? Perhaps I am just too cynical...

Not sure how much I wanna get involved in this debate, but generally I dont think student loans are a big deal. However, if it puts some people off going to Uni maybe thats a good thing, degrees seem to be pretty undervalued as it stands.

Dave i'd just like to comment on your bite at the lib dem's,

Lib Dems have a very small control in the goverment due to amount of seats they won, so they are not going back on there word just dont have control over it, people are saying they are going back on there word when really what they are doing is insted of no control in goverment they have a small influence which is better then nothing for all of you who voted for them and BTW im pissed about the rises as much as anyone els is effects.

And yes dave i did.

Do you know how many of the lib dems actually voted against it compared to how many signed pledges stating that they would.

...because oddly the two numbers are not the same.

As for the violence, the protests wouldn't have even made the news without it, that's all I'll say.

I'm going to say yes I did expect better, through naivety most definitely.

Aaron Porter did make a statement about the first wave of violence, perhaps he was letting that be enough...

Personally i think all the Rioters are a bunch of inconsiderate tossers.... Im a 3rd year chemistry student with just over 18 months left (masters course) and i couldnt care less if the fees go up, considering that a lot more people these days are going to uni and de-valuing a degree, by doing some bollocks course like "media" blah, as stongle said on another thread Sciences maths and maybe some humanities should be subsidised.... but not others

If it means i have less struggle looking for a post grad job (though i realise to a point my degree is more specialised anyway) then good for me....

Thats why i voted labour, who can trust politicians eh!?

Agree with the de-valuing of Degrees. From my experience/expertise, I would say its definitely an issue in the sciences too, with regards finding employment. HND/GCSE jobs are going to BSc and the kinda graduate jobs you might expect to find are going to PhD types.

Saw something the other day with a statistic that read along the lines of in the past 20 years, the rate of attendance at University has trebled.

I read a compelling suggestion by an acquaintance on another forum that said something like, acheive a 1st class degree, receive 25% of your fees back, 2.1 10% percent etc, or you could substitute realistic figures. Point is, thinking like that would incentivise the best students, reduce drop outs, and perhaps dissuade dossers from attending.

Well if the Lib Dems were in power Id probably be more likely to share some tissues with the local unwashed, but they arent, so its difficult to expect all the policies/promises to be upheld.

With the best will in the world, it doesnt alwayshappen anyway (promises being kept, policies instated), let alone with the current Governing situation....
