Having returned home yesterday after playing the morning 5 man championship round I set about sorting out our gear from the days play(both my sons and my own) when it was noticed that a pot of paint in my sons pack had a broken ball inside it.(not particularly unusual) but on further inspection and to our great surprise this had been caused by a direct hit which had smashed clean through the pot wall!!!
This was very surprising as never heard or seen such a thing before so thought the pot was maybe faulty and had a weak spot, however the pot is solid with uniform thickness all around the hole and the area around it cannot be depressed by squeezing it at all?
Therefore, I can only presume either the guy who shot him was shooting'marbles' or his gun was well over 300fps!
I am by no means trying to incriminate anyone at all and not insinuating anyone was cheating as I genuinely feel that nobody deliberately tampers with their gun to make it over 300fps, but this probably highlights the fact that maybe everyone should be chrono'd at the start of every game to double check for this.
The main reason I say this is that if the shot had been at the lens then the consequences of what may have happened could have been catastrophic! not only in the form of injury but to the sport we love! we all know how damaging this would have been.

Rich, please read and see what you think as well as all other players.

Thanks.

Lenses are tested to 300fps and made of different plastic than pots.
Plus the way Liam dives about his pot would have take a few beatings in the past and probably weakened them.
Same thing happened to me on august walk-on.
But a pot is not a safety item. So doesn't needed to be tested to as strict safety standard.

there is no guarantee that the marker was over 300fps.

there are a few things to consider:

pod plastic is cheap plastic. it is easily vacuum formed and the rounded end on the bottom is where it is already under most stress. any decent whack has a fair chance of going through it. this isn't the first time i've seen this. it has happened to me on field. the same volley of hits that broke the pod had some break on me - they were no more noticebly a harder hit than any other.

the plastic in the pods is a completely different one to the polycarbonates used in mask lenses. the testing level on mask lenses is also way higher than 300fps. so what may have broken the pod, would be unlikely to break the lens.

that being said, there is definitely a need to keep a close check on fps. last big game i was at saw me being chrono'd at 9am, and played through til 330pm without being called for a rechrono - though i did myself after a battery change.

I know guys that it could be any other reason and probably is, thats why i'm not making a big deal of it. Just that if it was then it could've been bad. It was a suggestion that checks made to everyone all the time to prevent such an occurrence. We all know the fps can change on its own throughout the day. None of us want to see anyone hurt. :)

Not unusual at all. When the pots get old and the plastic gets brittle the flexibility in it dies off. So a square hit will will smash an old pot. have a look around an event at the end of the day and see all the pots that have gone to paintball heaven :) at a guess 10 to 20 at the end of yesterday

At a walkon at my local site we had some polish guys turn up that got battered allot that day by us. At the point they turned their markers up without us knowing.

That game i was stood in a building and the balls being shot went through damp wood. At that point one of the GBH guys got shot in the center of his mask and it bucked his lense.

Theses guys have been asked never to come back again as all the markers they were using were set over 350 fps after testing. One guy even ran off before so his marker could not be tested which leads us to beleive was set near 400 fps.

Tbh i think before every game markers should be tested for this reason.

thats fair enough Lump, cheers. Its not something i've noticed before or had so was quite a shock to find especially when the plastic seems very 'strong' around the hole.
No way put us off though!:D

Woah 0.o 5 more fps and that could have ended very differently for that GBH guy.
