Well the majority of non-meat-eating pets were originally domesticated for food in the first place. It would be different if I was talking about a rabbit or something that had been a pet in my own family for years. Then again, it would be too tough if it was old!

Dogs, when you're sick, will sit by your feet and look up to you and say "Dude, you ok? Can I getcha somehting?"
Cats, when you're sick, will perch over you, lick their chops, and say "So I hear you're not FEELING well, Hmm?"
I have 4 cats, BTW. I can respect an animal that understands that, in the end, you're a food group.

Cats rock, they are cool but female ones are very jealous!
Dogs however are far cooler, they understand! I remember when my dog, an English Setter was dying I was upset and he got up off the floor (struggling) stumbled over to me and put his head in my lap wagging his tail as if to say "hey, its ok!"
