Tournament rules state that modified goggles are banned
By definition cutting of fixed straps is modification
Whether this is actually enforced is another matter
Only enforcement of this I've ever personally experienced is being asked to remove stickers from them.

Technically changing/replacing/adding/removing any part of the goggles is modifying. If you wanted to be an arse, you could argue that replacing a lens is modifying from the original goggle as it was intended to be used out of the box... etc

In short(for the thread creater), it's down to referees discretion; never however have I seen anyone penalised or queried for having removed a chin strap, and yes, it's what all the cool kids do :)

Don't talk daft goggles are built with interchangable lens, so there is no basis in the arguement that changing lenses is modification
Removing the lenses and not replacing it is though

Now whose being daft Mr Eric :)

I was more pointing out the lack of definition within certain rules. Yes, it was a obsurd example; that was the point...

I read a set of tournament rules just out of interest when I found a link on the net, they were for an american national tournament though.
Those rules stated that you could modify goggles if the parts added or replaced were made by the manufacturer of the goggles but that you could not modify standard parts.
So you couldn't cut down a face plate but you could change lenses and ears.
Under those rules you couldn't cut off chin straps.

They also didn't allow mirrored lenses or lense decals.
