I think the US Navy SEALS have a motto which goes something along the lines of "A man is only defeated if he gives up or he dies".

In other words, being truly 'hard', to a great extent, is about mental resilience - the human body can be pushed much further than many people have the mental toughness, the "inner metal" to take it. They will be defeated long before their physical ability is. When you are defeated mentally, the physical defeat will be soon to follow.

If you were to look at any of the world's best special forces units, I'm sure they won't be packed with the biggest, hardest looking guys - but they will be the kind of people who will keep getting back up in a fight, until they win or they die.
I think this pretty much sums it up for me.

I never said he was wrong to do what he did...

I meant the example given wasnt a good one, because in my eyes the instructor did go looking for a fight, even though he was in the right....
Seany, if you are true to your word, then I apologise mate, I thought you meant you would advocate allowing the woman to get beat up, which for me, isn't gonna be an option.
If I ever saw something like that and didn't do anything, I couldn't live with myself afterwards...well, I could live but I would feel ashamed of myself to be sure.

Being hard is being able to take what life throws at you,,and sleeping soundly after the worst day of your life and waking the next morning and raising your middle finger at the world and getting ready to take it all again.
not who can beat who in a fight.

First being somebody who is overly abrasive and all too willing to show off their physical power (most of the time in a little scuffle). In laymans terms, the guy who thinks he's hot s**t and wants to to take it out on the other guy.
Where I'm from, this is often the popular definition of hard. It's all false bravado, perpetrated by guys who didn't have a man to tell them or show them what it truly means to be a man. Yes, that individual may whoop many an arse in street fights but at the end of the day they're left with nothing but the adulation of others like themselves and bruised knuckles.

Navy Seals, SAS, French Foreign Legion training in the Amazon, a father standing up to gang members trying to recruit his son(s), a mother doing that same thing, a fighter stepping into the ring with an opponent that everyone (and on paper) says is a heavy favorite and giving it everything....that's 'hard.' To me 'hard' is all about mental toughness.

Here's my personal anecdote on 'hard.' I have a friend who was a Marine Scout/Sniper. When he was going through training to make it into SF, he was told that the Marines weren't looking for the biggest man....they can make you into that. They weren't looking for the strongest or fastest man, they can handle impart those qualities with the training as well. What they were looking for was the guy who wouldn't quit. Under the type of training they put you through, that particular quality can't be taught.

or.........what Matski said. Lol.
