What's the fascination with making PB TV/spectator friendly?

I think Ben was right in spite of his example, not because of it.

Tournament Paintball has had enough exposure for it to make a bigger breakthrough than it has both here and in the States. The transition does not occur due to lack of knowledge, but lack of genuine interest. Of course I agree that young males on a Punter day who are shown a video of XBall will look at the clothing, crowds and guns and moves and clothes and compare them to what they are wearing and doing and think, **** me, that's pretty cool - in comparison, and that is important - but the fact is they are not making the transition because ultimately, after their day's fun in the woods they lose interest until the next stag weekend or whatever.

You can give me the 800,000 argument and I can flip it back and say, how come then, that the UK's tournament population has been static for a decade? These 800,00 young males have not folowed up their interest one jot have they? Surely if it was that good they would have done...

We could put 200,000 copies of Pgi out through Smiths and we'd sell the same number. We know this for a fact.

By and large, people are not interested in Paintball as a sport - it is niche, it will remain niche, in my opinion. Ben's example may have been poor, but I think he was right irrespective.

To answer your question, and you must have known I would do this, I refer you back to the thread I started reference the state of UK paintball.
We may well have 800,000 frikkin people who have played and you may well marvel at the conversion factor to tourney ball being so low but you gotta factor in somewhere the notion that we got a bunch of grubby small time idiots over here masquerading as site owners and nobody is gonna want to keep playing site rental prices when there ain't no rec ball options available and we all know why we ain’t got no rec ball...

We got the market, we just ain’t got the people in place to exploit it.

I don't think Paintball will ever work on TV.

I don't think Paintball will ever be anything but a very niche pastime.

Unfortunately.

IMO it won't make any odds, unfortunately. Some sports just do not have mass appeal for a variety of reasons, and Paintball is one of em.

No I don't.

How many people in your sample of rec-ballers who have seen tournament videos and gone 'Wow'? 30? 50? 100?' It's still tiny.

I have taken all my mountain biking mates to play Paintball on three seperate occassions, some of them have played/watched tournaments that I got them into, I have forced them to watch DVDs...how many were interested and took it any further?

Zero.

Now given that these were all young, affluent, sporty guys who experienced tournament ball either first hand or on DVD after having played as punters, why should we not use that as our test group?

I think the evidence overall weighs more heavily in my favour than yours. Maybe the ESPN footage next year will shift it in your favour, but the NXL one sure didn't.

Gotta agree with Duffistuta to a certain extent that Paintball is such a huge leap away from most sports that even a base of sports orientated people will not necessarily take to it very easily, however I think the main reason for this is down to Robbos thoughts that there is no middle ground for them to go to, its either rental or full blown tourny player, all or nothing with no lead in.
I think if the there was a more stringent structure to the sport it would attract more interest.
