What's the fascination with making PB TV/spectator friendly?

It's a recurrent theme when debating formats that people mention which format is best to watch, and which would be best for TV.

What on earth is the fascination? Surely every league should concentrate on making the league the best it can be for the player? The best format from a sporting point of view etc? I just don't think it will ever be a widely accepted spectator sport - it's just not interesting enough unless you play.

To illustrate, I have an Indian friend (relevant because he had NO idea what paintball was, hadn't even heard of Woods style paintball so was totally removed from the idea of it as a sport) and the other day I mentioned what I had done at the weekend and as it was easier to show than explain (without sounding like a total geek) I showed him some NXL footage. He watched it for about 2 minutes and then simply said 'you need to grow up' and walked away. I established two things from this discourse; 1. Don't ever mention paintball again to anyone outside 'the circle' 2. Paintball footage, even of the highest quality teams, is fundementally dull to watch.

So my question; in the midst of all these league/format debates - which do people feel is most important for the long term growth of the 'sport', making paintball better for a spectator or better for the player?

Spectators/tv.

As, spectators/tv = money

Money = serious sponsors

Serious sponsors = more money

ect, ect.

And somewhere in between, recognition as a sport = more money and sponsors.

Because while-ever knowledge and enjoyment of paintball is limited to those who play the sport/game it will never grow into a recognised sport, therefore will always be limited.

*EDIT* Bugger Tom got there first!

Sorry didn't explain myself very well. My point is that is leagues etc concentrate on the player experience, instead of showing whatever happens on TV (which no one will watch anyway) then they would probably get more people to play the sport because it is so enjoyable as a participation sport (but pants to watch).

I am asking whether you feel that making the leagues better for players will generate more players (and therefore a bigger sport) or whether showing NPPL/PSP etc etc on TV will generate more players (people see it and say that looks boring - but I want a go anyway ;))??

Football is simple, that's why it's good tv.

Be fair the only rule that ever got anyone thinking is the offside rule. And even if you explain it to the average football fan, he or she has forgotten it within 5 mins.

This is why a sport like american football doesn't really work well over here. Far more exiting sport, but too many rules to understand.

Because if it plays great but looks crap, no one watching will have the slightest inclination to play it, although as a player I'd be happier with playing improvements!.

I doubt any sane person would take the opinion of a single indian voice as representative of our national response to paintball.

Ben, that is just so unscientific that it doesn't even deserve the type space it took up on this screen.
