What makes a good marshal/judge?

ok....here we go......

first...... and most important from my view as a marshal.....NOT BEING FUC*ING SCARED OF BEING SHOT!!!!!!!!....sorry, this is a little ting i have, guys if your marshaling your gonna get shot but shake it off and do your job....if your not right on top of the action you cant make the calls to the best of your ability.

second......as kris sed.........T.E.A.M!!!! an individual marshal can make a good call and take action in the game....but 99% of the time it kicks off after the game when the scores are done. It takes a good team of marshals to get info in so the ultimate can make a decision.

third........have fun and chill out. If marshaling is a drag and you want to be playing then fair enough.....JOIN THE CLUB!!!!we would all rather be playing. but you can make life easier if you try to have a cood time, chill with your fellow judges and the players.....not during the game:rolleyes: ....and just try to have fun.

Finaly.........there is loads of stuff like knowing the rules but to be fair, if you dont know the rules you shouldnt be marshaling. but you have to be confident in your calls....you know that ur fellow judges will back you up so make the right call. it does not matter who the plyer is or who the team are.........you are in charge and if push come to shove the organiser will side with you........so like i sed, BE CONFIDENT

here ends my mind

peace

Well, you guys already covered the stuff I would say, such as knowing the rules, ability to make the calls and teamwork. The comment about a guide book for refs hits home because I've been working on one (based on NPPL rules, not Mil - sorry). :D

This doesn't cover the rules themselves, but how to enforce the rules - roles, responsibilities, duties, zones, etc. Think of it as a Dummys Guide to Tournament Reffing (written by a certified Dummy), something to bridge the gap between the written rulebook and the field. One of the things I've found is consistency makes for good reffing. Not just consistency on one field but across all fields in the tournament.

Anyway, if you want to take a look at what I have so far, you can find it here. Constructive criticism is appreciated. Keep in mind it's a draft and I'm still working on it.

PS - Colin - Several companies still make red paint, including RPS and the new Drakula line of paintballs.

Have those 2 down and you've pretty much got it sorted in my book.
I'd agree with movement, I fail to understand how a marshal can check a player properly from 5 meters away and on the other side of their bunker.

Get in there people!!

BTW I was watching the Angel field at the MM on sunday and the guys on there, (Twisted?) looked brilliant, moving and talking to each other if needed. Nice one guys a credit to marshalling

Nice to finally put a face to the name, albeit briefly.

Better Things 2 Do!
Only having started tournement play and having not done alot of marshalling myself I do appreciate it when a marshal is willing to get in close and say play till I call you which makes life alot easier when 2-3 people are bearing down on you.

And as most people have said about this weekend at wrexham field 2 for marshalling and layout was spot on - even though we were kinda caught off gaurd because we didn't hear the 10second warning only to look up to see the other team bearing down on us - was bit of a shock :)

But was still my best game of the day - nothing to do with the fact that I still managed to make the snake and take all 5 of the other team and hang the flag when I should clearly be standing at the back :) - shame we only had one game on it

Having said that the guys on field 3 were also cool.

Cheers guys.
