What makes a good marshal/judge?

I'd really like to hear people's opinions on what makes a judge good or bad...

1) unbiased.

2) balls to make calls and penalise players. Enforce rules from the start and there will be less argueing and cheating as the day goes on.

3) Judge the game, and don't watch it. They are two very different things. Yes the marshall needs to know what is likely to be happening in his area and how the game will go down but all too often they get caught up in watching the game unfold and miss the players right in front of their own eyes.

4) the ability to admit when they make a mistake and try to correct it.

5) judge from in front of a player, not behind.

6) don't give players away, but if they have been lit up as they go into a bunker get in and check them.

any more tips or discussion points?

If you've had a bad call what would you suggest to correct it?

I would disagree ( dont hurt me )
I dont think you get good individual judges, i think its more to do with team work.
1 Judge cannot see everything but by coordinating your team of marshall's you can cover almost all the field
If one judge moves to check a player another judge covers his position until he gets back.
I would say very similar to how cricket players move around the field, you cover each others zones

Ah now that's an important one I completely over looked...

A lot of marshalling is probably weak because the guys don't actually know exactly what they should be enforcing...

Good point.

Maybe we could take a rule set, and break it down into a simpler guide of the rules relevant purely to the guys on the field...

good judges need to be players. That way they understand how the game flows, where they need to get stuck in, and where they need to stand back and let players play.

Good judges need to NOT be scared of getting shot.

great idea, how about posting a rough draft?

For which tournament series? :p :D :D :D

It's something maybe the Mill series might want to consider.

I know Goose was heavily into trying to clean up all the rules, and he might be able to make a 'crib' sheet for the judges...

Even if they just read it between games (not sure there is time) it will still be a good thing.

How many players can honestly say they have read all the rules each year for the series' they play in?

Nadda many I expect, but we ought to.

If Dynasty hadn't known all the rules and their rights they wouldn't have won the World Cup the year before last...

Dynasty made a mockery of Millenium Judging, and should have had some of their Judging Points Revoked. Then they wouldn't have won the series, and the message would be put out, if you don't do your job, you don't get the reward.

I respect this team as players, and the only reason they can't judge well is because they are lazy, and they think they can get away with doing a crappy job. And guess what, they got away with it, so the message has been sent to teams, loud and clear, that it's ok to slack off as a judge.

For which tournament series?
Milleniums Of course, is there any other?

big big titties
ideally they need video replays cos i got taken out cos i slid into a bunker and cos trigger pull was so light i shot the bunker and a splatter hit my hopper, it ws yellow paint which was wot i was using and the other team was using red......wasnt to bothered tho, we still won:D

No, that's exactly the point we're trying NOT to make!
you don't need video replay, you need good judges. A hit looks different than splatter, and good judges can tell the difference most of the time.
(does anyone even make red paint)
The Judge needs to make the call, and it needs to be the best call possible in the circumstances.

If your trigger is so light that your gun is going off by accident then it's an unsafe marker. Get it fixed. If your slide in with your trigger on the finger, then don't. Then you won't shoot your bunker, and mark yourself out.

Don't give the judges a reason to pull you, and they should leave you alone!
