What is the right number of tournaments to play in a year...

Limited marker tournaments with limited paint.. run them regularly, encourage punters to cross over and play. That will get the game exposed to 100s. Keep the limited format going, create a reason to buy entry level kit.
Most 'techno' sports have a competition structure that encourages a gradual build in kit, with techniques developing alongside it. Look at F1.. you start in karts and work up.
Paintball isn't like that yet..... seriously, how many teams still have **** players because they've got a big car and provide lifts?

The arms race is fine at the top level, but it's a joke below that. We need an organised entry level, where players can have a season on 'site' markers and similar, then move up to ions etc... I've asked the newbies, one of the big paintball turn offs is showing up at a tourney with bottom end kit and facing players with £1400 of gear. I know that kit isn't everything, but it's a bloody help, look at it this way, if you show up at a tourney and get spanked you look for a reason, if the one you settle on is 'they've got better kit' then you'll never put the effort into sticking with it. I've spoken to 100s of punters while at practices...... they are interested when you start, then they hear about the costs and that's it. (Doesn't help that they've just paid £5 for 100 paintballs and watched you unload 200 into a bouncy castle in one go).

We need a 'bottom end' to our sport, without it we won't go anywhere.
'Cos without your backside your legs would drop off :)
I suppose, what I'm saying is, Paintball needs an arse.

On a totally unrelated note, what's Raffles doing now?

Wouldn't one UK league make life much simpler?

When the industry decides to settle on one format, instead of hopping around...

I would FAR rather have one UK league...with a good consistant turn out.
I think it would be far more beneficial to the UK tournament scene than having several different series going on throughout the season...

Also, it puts all teams in their place.

My view...

I think it would be good if someone (Russ!) Ran a top event with all the Millennium rules and field layouts two weekends before each Millennium that all the top English teams play. Disruption, Shock, Nexus, Method, Tigers WOW what an event you get to play and see some of the best players play and if you play at them events that’s how you get noticed and maybe pick up buy a top UK team.

As for other events, don’t do a series winner just do winners on the day so teams don’t feel like they have to play all the events. We need to do quality events not quantity! But it looks like we have a lot of little events that don’t seem to be that good for players. I’ve asked a lot of people what the event are like over the last few weeks and I don’t hear that must good stuff coming out of peoples mouths.

Cut the number of tournaments/series down, put better ones on and get top UK teams to them. You might even get some top Euro teams to them too!!
to be honest thats probably the best idea ive read on here in a long time.
if you only had two divs (say Open, and AM) then that would make it feasable for a one day event, right?

give it a central or alternating location and you could be onto a winner.

I'm liking that idea as well.

Only trouble is - would teams pay the cost of a tournament, right ahead of a Millennium event? We all know they're not exactly cheap.

I think if it was run as a casual kinda tournament - 16/20 teams - green fee + paint...small amount of organisation - that might work?

thats what i was trying to say, make it just two divs, over one day. or each div, have a day each - hence two day event, but you only NEED to be there at the day of your division.

That way you have, I think, the main plus - it would allow heavy competition on the same layouts, pre-event, to the MS with more incentive than just "come train at my site, with some teams, we have the M5 field set up..." for example.

A one day event shouldnt cost much more than the masters really, especially if it adopts the 5 man xball lite approach (3 points to win is it?).

One UK League would make life easier but paintball would suffer, if I did not have competition from other organisers - and them from me of course - paintball and formats would never develop and the loser in the longterm would be paintball.

healthy competition is good.

Let me remind everyone at this point that the PA is doing just that next season.
We have agreed we will be using new MS fields and the same layout as the next MS event.
We have not fully decided on the format as yet because I am still convinced Xball is the way to go for the PA but if the teams at the Managers meeting want a light version it will be taken seriously.

Russ if that’s what you are doing then good but run it with the Millennium rules. Why play X-Ball when people that go to your event will play Millennium format. I love X-Ball and its rules but it just don’t make any sense to do something the player will not be doing at bigger events.
Look what the XPSL did in California, It’s the feeder event for the NPPL and its run with all the same rules as the NPPL, its got stands for spectators, booths with people selling gear. It 100% a mini NPPL for the teams that don’t have money to fly all over the US they love it.

Russ, I have some ideas for you that might help next year… Hit me up on email juniorbrown72@sbcglobal.net
