Semi-pro!? Man, Pro refers only to the strength of a team, and the talent etc. Pro is not something defined by sponsors, its nothing to do with sponsors, pros just get all the sponsorship because they are PRO and are the BEST!

Teams aren't refered to as pro becuase of their sponsorship. Sponsors look for the best teams that will promote their products and since pros have a far wider sphere of influence than Novice etc. they clearly get more.

Surely you know what the term "Pro-Team" means and refers to..?

i think you got that wrong.

1)pro - is short for professional. a professional is some one who gets paid for their job. very few ballers get paid to play, the only money a baller may get is through endorsments or from prize winning. few actually get paid - unless they work for a company and while playing are doing work for a company.
2) any tom, dick or harry could enter a competition as a pro, they would have to pay the pro entry fee instead of the am or nov. this does not make them pro.
3) pros are not necesserly the best - there are novice teams that beat pros and there are ametuer teams that regularly beat pros.
4) sponsors will look for teams that will get they gear noticed by other people - if sponsors were looking for the best teams then according to your arguments then am and nov would not recieve sponsorship as they are not the best. how is this so as many am and nov are sponsored in some form.
5)a novice team will have more written about it if it wins say a millenium than a pro team that does not. media has a lot to do with sponsors, i know as i have worked with the pompy uni team to be on bbc news, local tv, the news papers and other paintball mags.
6)

em.....if you read the post, i was explaining what "Pro" meant in a paintball context, and i'm right. Pro might mean something different in some other sport, but who cares, we're talking about paintball.

how can we be accepted by the public as a sport, etc if we go and confuse them with our own defination of pro. xball has changed it to divisions so that the public can see straight away what level a team plays at. the public would understand that professional players get paid but would not understand the idea that pro is actually a level of play.

for paintball to get into the mainstream then there needs to be a common sports language used: professional = job, semi-pro = get some money or sponsorship, or non-pro = pay to play.

fish, i assume that you call yourself professional as you play in the pro division. i think that you are a semipro playing in the top division as, i assume, you have a day job.

these are just opinions, but the media and public will be confused if paintball does not clarify itself, and confusion is not what we want if we want to get the sport to a point where there are professionals.

i ask you, how many times have nexus been on tv or in the papers or on the radio in the UK. your rep is that you are one of the best UK teams but i have seen none of you on tv. a minor team such as portsmouth uni has been on bbc news, on the radio, local tv and in newspapers, yet for some reason you have the sponsorship. your reply will be that you are better, but this is because you get to train more and you have one of the most influential people in paintball to train you. i would be willing to bet that if the uni team were to have the training and support you get we would be able to take you on and give you a strong run for your money (as the saying goes as ballers do not get paid)

Rich there is also the issue of innate ability which can be developed by training but the latter is frankly no substitute for the former

This is not to say that there is a dearth of talent amongst the Portsmouth Uni guys but given the recruiting base it would be unlikely that they could equal the Nexus Guys even given equivalent training

And you may be making promises with your mouth that the other Uni guys end up paying for with their arse at the training day ;)

many of the uni guys are thinking of not doing the nexus day as they think that the cost will not balance with the gains (40 for entry + paint = lots) where as for that cost we can run 2 sessions ourselves and train constanly with another team(s)

In that case may I suggest that they talk to anyone who has been on a previous Nexus training seminar, or even those who went to the Ambush training day & got just a little taster of what Nexus training is like. I don't know anyone who hasn't thought it well worth while & really informative!

Dude why u tryin to rock the boat??

Fi$h was talkin bout PRO in paintball terms then you come along with the dictionary definition, Fi$h is right!

The guy asked wot a pro paintballer was Fi$h explained, there aint no dictionary's kickin about the ballin fields so wots the need in trying to confuse the issue?

Pro in paintball means your at the top as he said its the highest level you can goto there for if you wanna play in it you gotta be good (if u wanna win), that s wot Fi$h was gettin at!

A aint tryin to put any1 down here, looks like your tryin though! Yeah...... Fi$h gets called PRO cause he plays PRO, not semi-pro, maby-pro or anything else PRO. We both trainined very..very hard to get where we are, and i think that its pretty dodgey that your tryin to bring him down :(

But hey each to their own I guess the sayin is

End of the day PRO in paintball is just that .......PRO. It's nothing to do with gettin paid its about the level of paintball your playing at!
