X-ball overall was flawed from the begining.
I'll explain;
First off, everyone was pretty half hearted about playing, as demonstrated by the fact that the Russians and USA didn't even bother to play the 3rd/4th place game at Campaign Cup. The Nations cup was tacked on to the 7 man tournament, and the Promoters seemed to treat it like it was second importance to the 7 man.
Then there's the fact that it was played after dark, any paintball played after dark sucks big time!
And most of the teams were dead tired, playing x-ball and playing competitive 7 man would have caused players to play under more strain than in a normal tournament.
I remember when the Nations Cup was first conceved, and some people said that it was a bad idea, well they were right! But sometimes you can make the best of a bad idea, and you end up with something that's actually pretty good.
But it wasn't a failure, not by a long shot. I think that X-ball was a success on many levels because it brought x-ball to europe. Steve Morris, to spite friction with some promoters, managed to bring a level of contenuity to the event that has been relativly unseen in Millennium series tournaments. He had a list of requirements, some negotable, some not, that made X-ball consistent across 6 events. This level of planning, and sticking to the freaking plan is something that the Millennium Series needs to sort out! Anyhow Steve did the job he was paid to do, even when some of the Promoters didn't make it easy for him, so like him or not you have to accept that he did succeed.
What the nations cup series did was show us that you don't need 45 minutes between games, you only need 5, if you're properly prepared. So the leson learned is that all paintball, X-ball or 7 man, there needs to be consistency in the setup, not just consistency in the format.
I really enjoyed talking with the guys who played x-ball, Nick and Chris from the Ducklings, Paul from Strange, and even Ginger Todd, i enjoyed talking to Max and Alex about their experineces playing in the states, and playing nations cup x-ball. i was impressed by how professional most of the x-ball teams were.
If we play x-ball in europe next year, it needs to be during the day, needs to be played by the top clubs, and needs to be well organised by a diciplined group who strive to make the format as professional as possible.
Success? yes. Could it have been better? Yes. It's behind us now, but we can make it worth while by learning from it, and not making the same freaking mistakes next season.
