Given your premise it seems to have been a mixed result at best with a fairly even split among players finding it exciting or boring and from reports I've heard seems like only Sweden may have had any real public presence.
Now if you'd like to discuss the real reasons the NC was put on . . .

Regardless, Steve, you personally should take a lot of pride in doing a difficult job for little thanks and lots of grief. And you should think long and hard before doing it again.
You know, I can only guess why the Nations Cup series was put on and that would be to expose Euros to X Ball, which it did. If it was fun for the public and the players and gave some people paintball that was a lot more interesting to watch then we succeeded.

This is very anecdotal but I had not a few people tell me that they had never been able to get themselves truly interested in watching PB until they had seen X Ball. As I said earlier, I've also had a lot of players tell me they want to play X Ball and some Swedes have said they would really like to see a series of X Ball tournaments run in Scandinavia.

I thank you for the compliment, Paul, and I did stake a lot of my personal pride in putting on the events. Perhaps too much. Some have said I took it too seriously and that I am way too anal.

All I can say is, I wasn't about to just sit back and let it be slip-shood and end up looking like a refugee camp. I wanted to give the public as good a presentation as could be done and to serve the player-participants with a very convenient way to play with everything (staging area, air, chrono stations) right next to the playing field. (After all the miles I ran between staging area, fields and WDP techies while playing the 7-player, I really appreciate the X Ball layout even more).

I wish I could look into the crystal ball to see what's going to happen next year.

X-ball was great!

I played 3 games, marshelled 1 game and watched a lot of games and it was a pure rush. I had a good time.

I got bored with the 7 man finals even as a player (except in Sweden, where the finals wer arranged properly).

I'd like to thank you Steve for your dedication on the game and X-ball. You had sometimes a lot of $hit on you most of it from people who didn't even bother to participate, witch was totally unfair.

I think we could try a scandinavian X-ball league also, as a season could start indoors. At least 10 teams would attend (the SXL ;-)), and lot's of crowd in each country as it's something other players love to watch and are willing to bring their friend over also.

I'm interested to see what happens next year. Only one word of advice for the Mil board and the rest of you dealing with this: Don't make the 7-man players to pay the bills of possible X-ball league... It would be a mistake.

Big up to Steve!

In my opinion the EXL was a great success, as my girlfriend thought that it was one of the most entertaining things she´d seen in years, barring me that is, and she gets bored after ten minutes of regular ´ball. And of course I enjoyed it very much also.

The two nights of X-Ball were great to watch, the players showed great skills and because the games kept coming you got to know the key players and it seemed like the teams would try anything to wrong foot their opponents.

The points system adds a tactical relevance to each game, like when the Russians were running out of time and they kept throwing in the towel and then breaking into the other teams half of the field.
The comentating (though annoying) kept everyone up to scratch on whats going on and the scoreboard was helpful too.

There were about 20 or so non paintballers watching from behind the scoreboard on the second day, mainly local kids and some of them shaolin monk guys who were staying in the lodge, they just stood their mouths open in awe.
I know 20 people isnt much but its a start, this what i want people to think of when I talk about paintball.

The finals on Sunday on the other hand were quite boring, it might have been because i was deprived of beer and 'cigarettes' but we seemed to be waiting for 20 minutes to watch a 5 minute game, or even worse some sandbaggers getting their moneys worth.

Im really looking forward to the nations cup next year, Im proud that these people are representing paintball in the UK because they have the skills and game format to show them off.

All in all i can't fault it at all.

X-ball overall was flawed from the begining.
I'll explain;
First off, everyone was pretty half hearted about playing, as demonstrated by the fact that the Russians and USA didn't even bother to play the 3rd/4th place game at Campaign Cup. The Nations cup was tacked on to the 7 man tournament, and the Promoters seemed to treat it like it was second importance to the 7 man.
Then there's the fact that it was played after dark, any paintball played after dark sucks big time!
And most of the teams were dead tired, playing x-ball and playing competitive 7 man would have caused players to play under more strain than in a normal tournament.
I remember when the Nations Cup was first conceved, and some people said that it was a bad idea, well they were right! But sometimes you can make the best of a bad idea, and you end up with something that's actually pretty good.

But it wasn't a failure, not by a long shot. I think that X-ball was a success on many levels because it brought x-ball to europe. Steve Morris, to spite friction with some promoters, managed to bring a level of contenuity to the event that has been relativly unseen in Millennium series tournaments. He had a list of requirements, some negotable, some not, that made X-ball consistent across 6 events. This level of planning, and sticking to the freaking plan is something that the Millennium Series needs to sort out! Anyhow Steve did the job he was paid to do, even when some of the Promoters didn't make it easy for him, so like him or not you have to accept that he did succeed.

What the nations cup series did was show us that you don't need 45 minutes between games, you only need 5, if you're properly prepared. So the leson learned is that all paintball, X-ball or 7 man, there needs to be consistency in the setup, not just consistency in the format.

I really enjoyed talking with the guys who played x-ball, Nick and Chris from the Ducklings, Paul from Strange, and even Ginger Todd, i enjoyed talking to Max and Alex about their experineces playing in the states, and playing nations cup x-ball. i was impressed by how professional most of the x-ball teams were.

If we play x-ball in europe next year, it needs to be during the day, needs to be played by the top clubs, and needs to be well organised by a diciplined group who strive to make the format as professional as possible.

Success? yes. Could it have been better? Yes. It's behind us now, but we can make it worth while by learning from it, and not making the same freaking mistakes next season.
