UK tournament organisers put their cash and time on the line to make a profit (as do all tournament organisers worldwide!and so they should!) but the difference bertween the UK and the US is in my opionion as follows:
in the US there are two, maybe three, or possibly even four major leagues to play in (in my opinion there is only really two, NPPL and PSP, but thats just my feelings) over here in the UK we have between 6 or 7 tournament series to choose between (yes most AM or Nov teams have to choose one of them only due to cost!)
we have a player pool of probably 10% of what the US does but we have more tournament series????? if all of the organisers got together 'a la' Millennium and set up a national tournament series (one of them only!!) with Pro, Div 1, Div2 and Div 3 if enough teams, they could get better industry support, attract more teams, attract foreign teams possibly (euros maybe!) and in turn and as a direct result of the higher profile, greater industry support and ability to scale charges to playing standards, offer better and worthy prizes for the outlay! thus attracting more teams trying for that prize fund.
