agh well there WILL be a next time so we can show them up then.

Note: mind to keep some holiday time for that

The deal with PSP and DCP opens all sorts of fascinating doors for the sport...which one gets opened will be truely interesting to see.

Since DCP has acquired the rights to film and distribute paintball in the form of X-Ball, it's fair to infer that PSP and DCP will work together in making it something palatable to the millions who will watch the presentation. That means the possibility of changes being made to the format to further enhance its' viewability to the masses.

Which makes me wonder what route DCP/PSP will take in enhancing sport for presentation on TV. Do they take the route similar to Pure Promotions, with highlights of important games, with commentary from hosts, or do they take another route? Just speaking for myself, I find X-Ball entertaining to watch. The constant movement, smallish field and gobs of paint being thrown make for an exciting game.

However, I'm a bit worried that DCP will want to make changes to the format to make it more interesting to a non-playing, non-educated public. My specific worry is that they could take the route of presenting paintball as a sport in the manner that WWF Professional Wrestling is presented to the public. I know Tyger has thrown this idea out there before and been roundly criticised for it. I think he's right that it'd be an extremely marketable package, but it'd utterly ruin the reputation of the sport and dash any chances of it ever gaining mainstream acceptance in a serious fashion.

Speaking for myself, I have no illusions that DCP will leave X-Ball in its' current format and air X-Ball matches live. Entertaining and exciting as it is, I don't think it'll survive the time allotments and commercial breaks required for commercial TV. Something along the lines of the Huntington Beach video (minus the dork hosts, thank God Rocky was there to keep things from getting out of hand) with its' outstanding post production editing would fill the bill nicely. But I truely fear the route of turning the sport into a testosterone fueled soap opera like the WWF, with characters talking smack to each other pre- and post-match, and generally over-the-top marketing. The financial success is hard to argue with, though. And I admit the thought of Robbo from Nexus trash talking Lance from Paintballchannel.com pre- and post-game makes for giggle producing thoughts.

But, it's out of my hands, like it was ever in my hands. The 4 years I've been doing my show and writing here and there have shown significant amounts of growth within the sport, and each year has been has been more interesting and exciting than the last. 2003 has been a beast of a year, and 2004 will be something to behold.

Furbs, I had a little talk with somebody (well respected and maybe's in the know) when I was in New York and he said there were plans to *******ise the production of X-ball to the point where half of the players wouldn’t even be playing in the new format because of 'aesthetic' requirements.

And I mean, how the players 'look', not just what they are dressed up in, I mean the likes of Lasoya will be fine but others who are perhaps less marketable in terms of image will be replaced with 'bodies' with no particular paintball expertise.
The WWF comparison was similarly used by this guy also !

Now this may be complete and utter bull or even wishful thinking on his part but knowing American television as I do, I wouldn't be surprised in the least :)

I was afraid of that...hopefully it's BS and wishful thinking on your source's part.

I'd hate to not even have a chance at that level of the sport because of my sub-standard aesthetic (I'm generally described as 'rough' looking) appeal.

Like I said, it'll be interesting to watch and see how things develop.

I've said all along it's going to be reality TV meets American Gladiators with guns.

Which might be brilliant, if you like that sort of things - and a lot of people do.

Me, I hate reality TV with a passion I usually reserve for nazis and Newcastle United, so I hope I'm wrong...

Ah, now the truth comes out.
There's a cost to everything, putting paintball on TV could change the way we play ball althgether, and maybe not in a good way.

But then again, (using the WWF analogy) WWF wrestling bears no resembleance to proper olympic wrestling, both exist independant of each other, but one is real and one is fake!

I'd love to hear how they might approach the issue of good looks;

'sorry, you're one of the best paintballers in the world, but you're too ugly!'

then again, ugly could be good, because in the WWF all the bad guys are ugly. In fact arn't all ugly people inherintly evil? ;)

I resemble that remark!

I've been thinking DCP is going to go the American Gladiators route all along. Although a reality TV series set in the paintball world might be interesting to see. Of course they'd probably have to beep out about every third word

As far as the WWE/wrestling comparison - ask any high level amateur wrestler what he thinks of WWE-style wrestling. Most don't like it because of the way WWE has tainted the image of wrestling - it's all fake, they're all psychos, etc, etc. Looking forward to that type of presentation for paintball?

Anyone else think the idea of Bob Long wearing a turban and harem pants as he leads his "Assassins" onto the field might be worth it? :p :p :p
