The deal with PSP and DCP opens all sorts of fascinating doors for the sport...which one gets opened will be truely interesting to see.
Since DCP has acquired the rights to film and distribute paintball in the form of X-Ball, it's fair to infer that PSP and DCP will work together in making it something palatable to the millions who will watch the presentation. That means the possibility of changes being made to the format to further enhance its' viewability to the masses.
Which makes me wonder what route DCP/PSP will take in enhancing sport for presentation on TV. Do they take the route similar to Pure Promotions, with highlights of important games, with commentary from hosts, or do they take another route? Just speaking for myself, I find X-Ball entertaining to watch. The constant movement, smallish field and gobs of paint being thrown make for an exciting game.
However, I'm a bit worried that DCP will want to make changes to the format to make it more interesting to a non-playing, non-educated public. My specific worry is that they could take the route of presenting paintball as a sport in the manner that WWF Professional Wrestling is presented to the public. I know Tyger has thrown this idea out there before and been roundly criticised for it. I think he's right that it'd be an extremely marketable package, but it'd utterly ruin the reputation of the sport and dash any chances of it ever gaining mainstream acceptance in a serious fashion.
Speaking for myself, I have no illusions that DCP will leave X-Ball in its' current format and air X-Ball matches live. Entertaining and exciting as it is, I don't think it'll survive the time allotments and commercial breaks required for commercial TV. Something along the lines of the Huntington Beach video (minus the dork hosts, thank God Rocky was there to keep things from getting out of hand) with its' outstanding post production editing would fill the bill nicely. But I truely fear the route of turning the sport into a testosterone fueled soap opera like the WWF, with characters talking smack to each other pre- and post-match, and generally over-the-top marketing. The financial success is hard to argue with, though. And I admit the thought of Robbo from Nexus trash talking Lance from Paintballchannel.com pre- and post-game makes for giggle producing thoughts.
But, it's out of my hands, like it was ever in my hands. The 4 years I've been doing my show and writing here and there have shown significant amounts of growth within the sport, and each year has been has been more interesting and exciting than the last. 2003 has been a beast of a year, and 2004 will be something to behold.
