Great Britain is england,wales,scotland and northern ireland i believe, therefore being a brit doesnt make you english, thats like calling someone asian because they are actually mongolian or something
p.s. couldnt think of another place that has a name for a collective of countries
Erm, "Asia" is a continent. So along the same lines would be Europe, Africa, Americas, Antarctica, Australia (Oceana/Australasia, depending on which decade you went to school)... you get the picture.
I suppose another similar example to what you actually meant would be Russia, which is what people used to refer to when they meant the Soviet Union, except that no longer exists...

When people talk about Russia, they mean Russia. When people talk about Ukraine, they mean Ukraine (no longer called The Ukraine, as it was called when it was no more than a region within the Soviet Union), when they dicuss Belorus, they mean Belorus....
Have a look at the news, Russia is never mistakingly used in place of some of the former members of the USSR...
