On the amusing side of swearing, at the Euro Indoor last year one of my team was warned for swearing when shouting at a teammate. He was confused for a bit until he realised the marshal's mistake and replied, "No marshal, his name is 'Kent', as in the county!" :D

On the serious side, I agree in principle with eliminating players for excessive swearing, but you have the problem of perception. What I'd deem excessive may be nothing like what you consider unacceptable & that make's it very difficult to marshal consistently and fairly.

IMO swearing should only be penalised if it's directed in an agressive manner at either marshalls or players.
Indirect swearing such as' oh bollox' should in no way carry penalties (I do tend to rant at myself if stuck in a 3 on 1 or such like, just to keep the old grey matter sharp and focused).
I don't shout abuse, I mumble profanities.
If someone's close enough to hear me they've either just mugged me or they're checking me for hits.

The swearing Rule applies to clearly audible
profanity or verbal abuse of players (yes even
your own) reffarees or spectators. The tournies
are reffed by tourny players so they usually
have a little sympathy when your in a jam an
start muttering to yourself:D

As a Rec-Baller who plays with the same people almost all the time, I never noticed how prevalant swearing was when we played until we went to another field to play a different bunch of players. One of the new players had his 12 year old daughter with him, he had to ask several times for people to stop swearing. Sad to say that I was one of the offenders, a great big F**K, seemed to lessen the humility of getting shot. Since then I have endeavored to stop swearing, but I fear it's a losing battle, but I can say that I no longer swear when we go to another teams field.

Penalties for talking in the deadbox? Uh, if you have a referee on the field that is paying attention to what is being said in the deadbox, he needs to be shot in the butt about 5 times to get him to PAY ATTENTION TO THE GAME ON THE FIELD. Oh, and how far does the verbal abuse rule go? I'll be the first to admit that I taunt, heckle, berate, whatever you want to call it on a freeflowing basis...why not? I'd rather someone call me just about anything rather than cheap shot, fight, or whatever on or off the field. Words are one heck of a lot better than close shots or fists, and in my opinion if you let people blow off steam the first way, it cuts down on the other two.

Onion, the only thing is that talkin' trash is the catalyst for the fist-fights you're talking about. Um, I've been involved in a couple 'occurences' where the only reason I said or acted was in response to one of my opponents verbal blitherings. I don't let my players do it, and I don't deal well with people disrespecting me or my mates. As far as people screaming, "Get him the f**k off the field ref!" and stuff like that, well, I understand.

The dead box rule is there to keep people from
influenceing the game as the dead boxes are located on the side of the field. If everybody
is playing a nice clean game as they should!
the reffs are not overworked. We play 5 man 5
min. games unlimited paint so if you have time to
hurl abuse your not really in the game. Most of the swearing comes from muggings or unpopular
calls
